６０年代後半という時期に黒人の人気ボーカル・グループでありながら、ソウルというより、むしろソフト・ロックという位置であり続けた人たちは、ワタシは他に知らないのです。（元々はジャズ・ボーカルの方から出てきて、レイ・チャールズともツアーした経験を持つ人達が中心になったグループで、初期にはやっぱりモータウンに入る話もあったそうです）

それがどういう運命かいわゆる黒人音楽のレーベルではなく、あの "secret agent man" で有名なジョニー・リバースの所に所属することになり、ママス＆パパスやアソシエイションのスタッフをバックに作品を出していくことになるのです。（それは一応、soul city という名前のレーベルではありましたが）

つまり、全盛期の白人ソフトロック界の中枢部に唐突に出現した黒人グループ、という印象なのです。更に、普通これだけの歌える黒人が５人集まれば、あの特有の「黒い」感覚が出ないはずはないのですが、何故か彼らには殆どそれがないのです。（これには、ジャズ・ボーカル出という素地も無視できないと思うのですが．．）

そんなワン・アンド・オンリーの味わいの、素晴らしいソフトロック名曲群を便利に網羅できるベストがこれ。（ジャケが同じで２枚組ＣＤもありますが）
ちなみに作曲陣には、jimmy webb、laura nyro という、後生に名を残す二人が頑張っています。

リアルタイムで聴いていた訳ではありませんが、二十数年前、丁度"洋楽"というものを聴き漁っていた頃(第二次ブリティッシュ・イノヴェーションの嵐吹き荒れし頃(^^;)、ふと流れてきた5th Dimensionの曲は、何とも形容し難く、あっという間にマイ・フェイヴァリットになってしまいました。
私の年代の(当時の)耳で聴いてさえ、軽い"郷愁"というか"懐かしさ"を覚えるようなメロディ、抜群に巧いという手前に位置しそうなコーラス・ワーク(^^;、ソウルもポップスもサイケデリックも、多分、60s後期という時代の空気を一杯に孕んだ全体的な雰囲気がどうしようもなく聴く側を惹きつけるのかも知れません。
B.バカラック作品やアシュフォード&シンプソン作品を取り上げていたのは知っていましたが、[3]や[4]のコンポーザーがL.ニーロであった事は最近気付かされた次第です。
多くのヒットを持つ彼等のベスト盤ですからハズレ確率は物凄く低いはずですし、何だか一日中CDかけていてもOKかなぁー、、、なんて思えるベストです。

　私が生まれた頃、洋楽界には空前絶後のマスターピースが続出していました。『サージェント・ペパー』、モータウンサウンド、フラワー・チルドレンのムーヴメントが起き、やがてウッドストックが開催され…。音楽の揺籃期、真にずば抜けたものが生まれた時代でした。その中にあって燦然と輝く名曲があります。それは“Aquarious/Let the Sunshine In”です。“Up,Up And Away”とともに、きっとどこかで聞いたことがあったのだろうと記憶の残像がある懐かしくもゴージャスな作り。絶妙のハーモニー。題名通り宇宙的な広がりを感じさせる世界観。彼らグループの名前は忘れられ、曲も断続的に膾炙しては闇に埋もれ、しかし初聴の人が出るたびその気持ちを確実につかむ名曲中の名曲なのです。
　キャリア的にも文句なしの大御所の彼らですが、不思議に前述の２曲しか聴いたことが無く今回ベスト版を手にしてみた訳ですが、意外にも軽いタッチの曲が多くて認識を改めました。そして彼らが当時の音楽シーンの中で特異な位置を占めていた理由もはっきりしました。確かにモータウン系統でもないし、カウンター・カルチャー色の強い若者のバンドでもありません。感じとしては「きちんと出来上がった」グループなのです。それもそのはず。彼らはジャズ畑のミュージシャン達だったのです。このCDの曲では例えば“Love`s Lines,Angels And Rhymes ”や“Ashes To Ashes”にそれが色濃く出ています。
　1970年代前後という稀有の時代に屹立して存在したThe 5th Dimension。しかし彼らがアース・ウィンド＆ファイヤーの様なブラック・コンテンポラリーを用意し、既にAOR的な曲調を提供し、そして必ずしも黒人音楽に好意的ではなかったグラミー賞への関門も大きく広げたのでした。そして今もなおその音楽のクオリティは新鮮にして至高の輝きを持っています。是非手にとって聴いてみてください。素晴らしい音楽体験になることでしょう。
