オタクで内向的なローランド・オーザバルと，ネアカでポップ志向なカート・スミスの２名が結成した英国のグループ。デビュー直後は電子リズムを使ったポップスだったが，次第に曲を書く司令塔オーザバルがイニシアチブを執り，思索的でシリアスな傾向が強まった。これが呼び水となったか，二人は1990年代に入って喧嘩別れ。バンドも空中分解。人気は泡沫のように消え去ってしまった。

本盤は彼らが喧嘩別れする直前の1989年に発表した作品で，プログレやジャズの色を大胆に採り入れた意欲作。最も売れた前作「シャウト」も掛け値なしに素晴らしいアルバムだった。しかし大ヒットした前作を受けての大事な局面で，ここまで売れ線と迎合しなかった心意気には，大層驚かされた。案の定，およそシングル化できそうにない長尺かつプログレ風の楽曲が詰まった本盤は，人気凋落のきっかけを作ってしまったのだが，これは覚悟の上だったろう。売れることを目的化することなく，掛けられる手間と精力は全て掛け，記録よりも記憶に残る名盤を作ろうとした彼らの生真面目過ぎるほどの良心が，かけがえのない作品となって私たちに残された。手塩の掛かったこういう良心的な作品が，中古で250円に格付けされている世の中は，やっぱりどこか間違っていると思う。

音楽を突き詰めるタイプのミュージシャンは、最高傑作を作ってしまうと、解散するか、メンバーチェンジするか、減速してしまうが、TFFは事実上の解散。でもそれだけにこのアルバムは、最高の完成度と緊張感とロックする音楽魂が脈打つ演奏が披露され、収録されている。
1曲目「woman in chains」とラスト前のライブ演奏「year of the knife」は、ロックミュージックの天才ミキサーボブ・クレアマウンテンがミックスしている。それだけに各楽器の分離の良さと、ノリの良さと、ロックする駆動感は抜群。特に「year of the knife」のドラムスのとギターの切れ味は、何度聴いても頭がいってしまいます。その後に続くアルバムラストの曲とのつながりと対比は素晴らしいの一語。

TFF事実上最後のアルバムとして輝いているだけではなく、ブリティッシュロックの到達点の一つでもある名盤です。
4曲の「adovice for the youung at heart」はベストアルバムのラストを締めくくっていた名曲。何となくラテン的というか、海を感じさせる陽気な優しさがある。カート・スミスの最高のボーカルナンバー。バックのサウンド、アレンジもまさに完璧。

1曲目「woman in chains」では、なんとフィル・コリンズがドラムスで参加。かっこいいです。プログレファンには嬉しいゲスト参加（カート・スミスのベースラインも味わい深いし、ニール・テイラーの弾き過ぎないギターが曲をクールに盛り上げる）。

TFFというと、初期クリムゾンのミニライブにかぶり付きで２人で見にきていた写真が印象的だった。そういう意味からもプログレッシブロックの正統的継承者のロックサウンドの到達点でもあります。

すでに発表されてから10年以上すぎているが全く色あせる事のない名作。コマーシャルな面では前作「Songs from big chair」収録の「Shout」の様な大ヒットソングが無かったため影が薄い印象だが、トータルな出来はこちらも全く劣らない。他のレビュワーも触れているが、BeatlesのSgt. Pepper's~~をほうふつさせるダイナミックなアルバム。買って損無し。
