   うまいだけでは無味乾燥。とはいえ、いくら味があってもヨレヨレの演奏なんて聴きたくない。うまくて味のあるジャズがいい。そんなぜいたくな注文にドンピシャリでこたえるアーティストが、フィル・ウッズ。ウッズのアルバムは多いが、どれを買っても後悔することはまずない。非常に確率の高いアヴェレージ・バッターである。
   本作は、ジーン・クイルとの2アルト・チームによる代表傑作。ウッズとクイルはともにチャーリー・パーカーを敬愛する白人アルト奏者であり、意気投合して57年にコンビを組んだ。チームとしての活動期間は短かったが、抜群のコンビネーションとぴったり息の合ったエキサイティングな演奏でたちまち評判になった。
   数あるアルバムのなかでも、人気があるのはやはり本作。ソニー・ロリンズの<1>、チャーリー・パーカーの<5>など、ジャズメンのオリジナルを取り上げた選曲もよく、このチームの魅力である情熱的な演奏をたっぷりと味わえる。<2>の熱いプレイなどは最高だ。（市川正二）

この一枚に関しては持っていて、全く損なしと断言します。
ﾌｨﾙ･ｳｯｽﾞのﾌｧﾝである私は甘めの採点になっているかも知れませんが
JAZZの楽しさ、醍醐味を十二分に教えてくれる作品だと思います。
長らく廃盤だったことも踏まえ、これは押さえておいてほしいと
切に思います。
名手が揃うとこんなに楽しくも美しい作品が出来るのかと
ほれぼれしますから。

アルト・サックス２人の「バトル」（戦い）というより「アンサンブル」と、２人の「掛け合い」の妙が心に沁みる。半世紀も前の盤だが、古臭さは微塵もない。なにしろ、選曲がいい。ロリンズの名曲「ドキシー」「チュニジアの夜」「ディア・オールド・ストックホルム」などなど。フィルは白人でありながら、黒人のフィーリングを持っている。最近亡くなったが、最近では数年前に、ヴィーナスから「スリル・イズ・ゴーン」というアルバムを出しているが、そちらもおすすめ。
