   『アート・ペッパー・ミーツ・ザ・リズム・セクション』という人気盤がある。レッド・ガーランド、ポール・チェンバース、フィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズという、当時のマイルス・デイヴィス・クインテットのリズム隊をバックにしたペッパーのワン・ホーン作である。
   同じ57年に録音された本作は、「フィル・ウッズ版ミーツ・ザ・リズム・セクション」とでもいった性格の作品だ。ウッズはマイルスのリズム隊に強い関心があったようで、ピアノのボブ・コーウィン、ベースのソニー・ダラス、ドラムスのニック・スタビュラスに、それぞれマイルス・バンドのガーランド、チェンバース、フィリー・ジョーのようなスタイルでプレイすることを求めた。その結果、マイルス・バンド風なリズム隊をバックにした、このワン・ホーン作が誕生した。
   全力投球のウッズもすばらしいが、本作のようにリラックスした調子でゆったり吹いているのもこれまたいい感じだ。ラテン調の<8>などは、哀愁と躍動感が見事に一体化、本当に泣けてくるいい演奏だ。（市川正二）

1950年代のウッズは豪快なフルトーンで吹きまくるのではなく、抑制の効いた演奏をしていた。現在のスタイルからは想像つかないが、ちょっぴり切ないような、気品のあるアルトプレイである。選曲もスタンダード中心にタイトル通りの暖かい演奏が疲れた心身を癒してくれます。乗りではなく落ち着いたフレーズで聴かせるアルバムである。
