元々は、アメリカ･デトロイト出身の彼女がミッキー･モストにスカウトされイギリスに渡ったことで大成功を収めた。彼女の音楽は、一見ロックン･ロールの真似っこ、フェイクじゃないかと思わせるが、ベースをブンブン唸らす豪快なステージングを見れば、彼女がロックに対して本気だったことが分かる。それでいて、自然と滲み出るあどけなさを合わせもっていたというアンバランスさが、なんといっても彼女の魅力だと思う。後のランナウェイズはカッコイイお姉さんたちを演出していたが、スージーは見た目からして、かなり幼い感じで、なのに、あのド派手なステージングをするのだから、人気が出たのも当然のことだろう。
そんなスージーの鳴らす音はやはり避けて通れない魅力があり、オリジナルアルバムを全部集めるまではいかないが、お手頃価格のベストで聴いておく価値は十二分にあると思う。

久し振りにスージーを耳にした。当時を思い出し懐かしんだ。確か１９７０年代大阪フェステバルホールだったと思う。彼女のライブを二階席で見た。男性メンバーをしたがえてベースかかえてシャウトしまくり。その当時ヒツトしていたワイルドワン、キャンザキャン、悪魔とドライブなど乗り乗りのステージだつたが、なぜか客席は６、７割位しかいなかつたように思う。でもステージは最高に良く、私自身大変満足して家路に付いたように思う。このベスト盤から特に推薦したいのがＭＯＶＥ　ＩＴです。この曲をとにかく聴いていただきたい。元祖、女性ロッカーとしての彼女の魅力が全て注ぎ込まれたベストです。

「悪魔とドライブ」や「キャン・ザ・キャン」などで知られる女性ロッカー、スージー・クアトロによる一連のヒット曲を収めたベスト盤です。リアルタイムの記憶ではイギリスのヒットチャートを賑わして日本での人気に飛び火したので、てっきり英国出身の人だと思い込んでいましたが、実際は1950年生まれで米国ミシガン州はデトロイト出身です。どうやら2007年のいまも活動中とのことです。

長い金髪を振り乱し独特のダミ声でシャウトする女性ロッカーと言えば、ジャニス・ジョプリンが先輩としていましたが、スージー・クアトロはそのワイルドな魅力に加えて、ビジュアル的にも衝撃を与えました。黒の皮ジャンのツナギを素肌にまとい、小柄な身体にフェンダーの大きなベースをブン回すというスタイルは当時としては前代未聞。特に多感な少年に色々な意味で刺激を与えたことは言うまでもありません。これは勝手な想像ですが、スージー・クアトロの台頭で刺激を受けて、後の「ランナウエイズ」や「プリテンターズ」などのガールズロックグループが生まれたのではないかと思います。やはり70年代初頭にメジャーデビューしたオリヴィア・ニュートンジョンが清楚な魅力を振りまいたのと、かなり対照的な存在でした。

収録曲は「悪魔とドライブ」「キャン・ザ・キャン」「48クラッシュ」「ワイルド・ワン」などのお馴染みのヒット曲から「キープ・ア・ノッキン」なども含めた計20曲で収録時間は約70分。こう考えると当時はアルバムよりもシングルカットがセールスの中心だったんですね。
