正直 Pavementの歌は壊れていると思う。でも自分に気持ち良く聴こえるのは 自分が壊れているからなのでしょうか？もう 彼らは とっくの昔に解散してしまっていて 新譜は 当分に聴けそうにないけれど 自分が持っている彼らのコレクションは 自分の耳には今も優しく聴こえてきます

USインディ代表のPavement。堂々の四枚目。相変わらず変なジャケットである。

感触としては、2nd『Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain』を洗練させた感じか。へろへろローファイであることがPavementの大切なキャラの一つであったが、それを再び全開にした前作から打って変って、今回はそのヘナヘナ加減をかなり「意図的に」コントロールしている気がする。例えば、M1はアルバム中でもとりわけヘッロヘロなヤケクソロックだが、それが本当にヤケクソの不安定さというよりは、かなり余裕なフラフラさのように感じる。そしてM2からはそんな「コントロールされた」ヘロヘロさの中を、退屈そうな歌が退屈そうに、相変わらずの美メロをなぞっていく。

このどこか安定した作風は、もしかしたら1stが最高傑作だと思う人などにはなかなか受け入れ難いものかもしれない。「あのノイジーでブチギレな私のPavementはどこに行ったの？」と。しかし、私が思うには、前作の混沌を経て方向性が定まったのか、このアルバムの曲は彼らの全キャリアを見渡して、かなり曲自体のクオリティが高いように思える。徹底したメロディ志向はバンドが元々持っていた「ダルい」感じと合わさって、荒くれカントリー的などっしりとした王道ささえ感じさせる。荒野を鼻歌混じりに、ゆっくりと、退屈そうに行く五人の姿が透けて見えそうである。日本で言うと、HiGEなどはこのアルバムに近い作風をしているように思う。

あと、マルクマスの詞はどんどん凄いことになっている。支離滅裂っぽくて、でもギリギリ意味はありそうな無さそうな。

ただ、このアルバムはひょっとしたら完成し過ぎていて、これまでのキャリア総決算的なところがあるから、次もこの路線でアルバムを作っていたらマンネリ化していたかもしれない。そこはまあ、ナイジェルの力を借りたりしながら上手くやり過ごしたわけだが。

　以前どこかのレビューで「クルーキッドレイン」は『逆説的なロックの再生』という評価を受けていた。対して「ブライトン・ザ・コーナーズ」は『今日的な僕らのロック』という評価だった。私は前者も後者も納得のいく評価だと思う。そしてどちらのペイブメントも聴き応えは十分あった。後者の身軽さと親しみやすさはとても気に入っている。気持ちが良い音。気に入ってます。
