 「ジョン・スペ」の知名度を一気に引き上げた傑作『オレンジ』に続く4th。
   ジョンスペといえば「完全に生まれてきた時代を間違えたようなアグレシッヴ＆ブルージーなロックンローラー」というのが一般的なイメージなわけだが、実はBECKやビースティ・ボーイズなどの90年代を彩ったロック・アーティストと同様、作品ごとに多様なサウンド・バリエーションへのトライアルを見せる知性派のミュージシャンでもある。ロックンロールを音楽的・理論的にとらえ、作品に鋭い批評性と適度な新鮮さを加えながら音楽シーンをサバイブしていく彼の資質は今作にもしっかりと浮かび上がっていて、ヒップホップのテイストを取り入れたナンバーなどはその顕著な例といえるだろう。
   しかし、作品全体から感じられるヴァイヴはやはり、「イエーイ！ ロックンロール!!」だったりするのがジョン・スペのすごいところ。知性に足を取られすぎてグルーヴ感を失うことも単なるロック・バカに成り下がることもなく、ロックンロールのもつ熱を現代的なサウンドで体現できる才能は、本当に稀有。ロックンロールというスタイルの「新しさ」を体感できる1枚。（森 朋之）

実に爽快、時代をぶっとばしてコード３つで全部を表現してた頃に舞い戻った彼等のバンドの核が見えた作品だ。随所に笑わせる仕掛けがあるが、それとて単なるユーモアではなく爆発力に繋がっている。明らかに前作までのアイドル化と露出度にケリをつけた完全玄人指向のその態度が潔い。ルーファス・トーマスと思われる黒人ヴォイスが花を添え、プッシーガロアに直結する音楽性とサウンド。録音、音質全てがブルース、ロックを感じさせるあざとい演出で満ちている。本作は海外と日本で評価が異なる作品の好例だろう。もっと客観的に評価したいよいアルバム。ただジャケ、内容共にスタイリッシュに過ぎるきらいもあり、それが常に白人ブルースの難といえば難。

壊れてます。といってもニルヴァーナの『イン・ユーテロ』みたいな痛々しい壊れ方じゃなくて、洗練された壊れ方とでも言おうか。
しかし、どこまでが意図したものかわかりません。

楽曲はバラエティに富みながら、アルバムとしての統一感は自然と失われていない。前作の『オレンジ』よりさらにアグレッシブに。ロックやブルースを演ったというよりも、それらを彼らなりにレンジにしたという感じ。ギターリフももちろん健在。ドラムもかなりファンキーなリズムを叩き出しているし、ハウンド・ドッグ・テイラー＆ザ・ハウスロッカーズを参考にしたベースレス・バンドでの演奏も、さらにタイトさを増している。なによりもアレンジが素晴らしい。

一般では前作の『オレンジ』が最高と言われていますが、個人的にはこのアルバムこそが最高傑作だと思います。

余談ですが、ジョン・スペンサー愛用の50ドルで手に入れた、60年代のフジゲン製ギターを間近で見てみたい・・・そういえばハウンド・ドッグ・テイラーも50ドルで手に入れたカワイ製のソリッドギターを使ってたっけ。

まずは聞くべし！ジョンスペ最高！なんでこんな事が出来るんだろうと思いながらずーと聞いていました。
