A band like Showoff would never make it in a world where people were nice to them. Lucky for us, they've been dumped, picked on, and double-crossed enough to make an exceptional power pop album. The Chicago quartet's debut recalls Green Day's more toxic moments. Repeated listening reveals a more emo-core band than a punk one. What else could explain frontman Chris Envy's pleas for love and understanding on "Someone" and "Second Chance?" A little electronic tweaking makes its way onto the fifties-flavored "Falling Star," but for the most part, Showoff keeps its oars in more rock-friendly waters.
