かつてエラ・フィッツジェラルド、サラ・ヴォーン、カーメン・マクレエを称して、女性ジャズヴォーカルの御三家と呼んだ。それだけ、この3人は傑出していたということ。3人のなかでカーメンは一番年下のように思ってしまうけど、実はサラより2歳年上。最年少と勘違いするのは、デビューが遅かったから。なにしろカーメンは、30歳を過ぎての歌手デビューだったのである。
ビリー・ホリデイに可愛がられ、影響を強く受けた。スタンダードを歌うだけでなく、コンテンポラリーにも積極的に取り組んだ。1960年代以降は特にその感が強く、たとえば1971年にハリウッドのクラブ「ダンテ」に出演したときのライヴ盤である本作でも、ヘンリー・マンシーニやレオン・ラッセルの曲を歌っている。ジョー・パスやジミー・ロウズを含むコンボをバックに、歌もしゃべりも絶好調のカーメン。数ある彼女のライヴ盤中、これは飛び切りの内容だ。一部ピアノの弾き語りも披露する。未発表曲も追加した堂々の完全盤。（市川正二）
