この時期のマイルスは正直言って人生の中で最悪の状態であった。仕事もなく麻薬付けの体はぼろぼろで、音楽的にも行き詰まり、東海岸のジャズメンが置かれている環境も劣悪だったときく。そのような状況の中で苦悩しながらブルーノートに吹き込んだのがこのアルバムで、かねてよりマイルスの才能に注目していたアルフレッド・ライオンがレコーディングの機会を与え実現したのであった。記念すべきブルーノートの１５００番台の嚆矢となった本アルバムこそいわゆるイーストコースト・ジャズの隆盛の出発点でもある。クールな演奏の中にもバップ魂が随所に見られ、来るべきハード･バップの萌芽が感じられる。特にテンパス・フュージット、C.T.A.などにハードな演奏を試みているが、一方でエニグマ、ハウ・ディープ・イズ・ジ・オーシャン、ディア・オールド・ストックホルム、イエスタデイズといったロマンティックな曲で見せるマイルスのセンシティブな感性は後のミュートプレイにおけるマイルス・リリシズムを彷彿とさせる。マイルスの５０年代の出発を印象付ける重要な録音である。Ｊ．Ｊ．ジョンソン、若きジャッキー・マクリーンなども好演しており５０年代の創造の源泉が凝縮されている。
