この2枚のCDにはマリオ・ランツアのすべてが詰まっている。カンツオーネ，イタリア古典歌曲，アリアからミュージカルまで全部で47曲収録。これを聴くまで彼はオペラ歌手だと思っていた。しかし彼の本領はやはりミュージカルだろう。付属のパンフレットによれば，イタリア移民の子として1921年にフィラデルフィアに生まれたというから，英語の歌がうまいわけだ。1954年の映画「学生王子」のメロディーは，有名なセレナーデはじめ5曲収録されている。オペラ出演は嘱望されながらあまり多くなかった。彼はMGMのオーディションでミュージカル歌手として世に出たものの，わずか38歳で急逝してしまったからだ。もしオペラ歌手としても大成していたとしたらと惜しまれる。これだけ美しいリリックテノールはまたとないのだから…。
