1978年作品。日本、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドを廻ったツアーの後、ディランがバック・メンバーと共にスタジオ入りし、完成させたアルバム。ツアー・バンドと息の合った演奏を随所で聴かせる一方、サックスや女性コーラスの多用によりポップなサウンドに仕上がっており、この作品を特徴付けている。今作発売前の来日時に作られたと言われ、武道館で初めて披露された「イズ・ユア・ラブ・イン・ベイン」はポップなメロディ・ラインが、とても美しいラヴ・ソング。かつてのフォーク・ロック時代を思い起こさせる一方、リズムのタイトさや重さが際だっているが、全体を通して詩の内容、サウンド面から新しい方向性を探っていると言えるだろう。サンタモニカでの今作のレコーディングの後、ディランは全米及びヨーロッパ・ツアーに入る。

なんといっても「IS YOUR LOVE IN VAIN」
そして発表されてから30年近くも経てなお、聴く者を圧倒する力。
僕はディラン信者でも何でもないが、ディランと同じ時代に
生きていられることを本当に幸せに思うし、これを支持する
大勢の人がいることもとても勇気付けられる。

ディランのラブソングについてはあまり語られることはないが、
この人が歌わなかったら、人類がこれだけ深い愛情の表現を
聴くことはなかったろう、というくらい凄い歌を作ってしまう。

これだけの名曲が、他の傑作に混じって間奏曲のように収録されて
いるところがたまらない。

ここから30年かけてまた新たなファンを増やしていくような
作品なんだと思う。

アルバム「Blonde on Blonde 」が初期の最高傑作なら、このアルバム「Street Legal 」は中期の最高傑作です。
一曲目の『Ｃａｎｇｉｎｇ　ｏｆ　Ｔｈｅ　Ｇｕａｒｄｓ』のワンフレーズ（Sixteen　years，・・・）を聴いた瞬間、打ちのめされました。
確かに「詩」は少々難解ですが、象徴的です。
そして「曲」は実に明確で、暗示的です。
アルバム「Street Legal 」はすべてラヴ・ソングです。
考えたり、ためらったりしている暇はありません。
さあ皆さん！天才詩人・ボブ・ディランの最高傑作アルバム「Street Legal 」をどうぞ、ご堪能下さい。

女性コーラスや、少し甘めのサックスが入っている事で、ややもすると、低く見られがちなアルバム。だが、ここであえて本作をディランの名作の一つに挙げたい。と、偉そうな事を書いているが、僕だってハイブリッド盤シリーズで出たから、思い切って買ったのだ。オフィシャル・アルバムだけで４０数枚あるディランのアルバム中、購入リストの上位には、やはり入りにくい一枚なのは事実だ。しかし、この独特な世界感は、やはりディランの音楽。甘いポップ・ソング5も、どこかで聴いた事があるようで、実は全く類似品がない。それがディランを一流にしている、ミュージシャンとしての圧倒的な個性。個人的には1がベスト・トラックかと思う。音質はかなり良い。
