Pretzel Logic marked a transition for Steely Dan from a studio-bound rock band producing hits such as "Reeling in the Years" and "Do It Again" to a looser constellation of studio musicians under the direction of songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. That later version of Steely Dan would paint its masterpiece with Aja. Pretzel Logic is much more playful than that, and also jazzier than the albums that came before. The jazz intentions are made perfectly clear on "Parker's Band", a swinging tribute to bebop titan Charlie Parker, and a crafty cover of Duke Ellington's "East St. Louis Toodle-oo". The lyrics displayed their own twisted logic, presenting a tumble of images in search of a unifying principle that most often remained elusive. Steely Dan was that rare act that could work such purposeful obscurity to its advantage: "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" was a top-five hit even though nobody had a clue as to what it was about. H.Silverの「Song For My Father」がベースの＃１、Duke Ellingtonのカヴァー＃５
（Fagenがsaxを吹いているらしい）、Charlie Parkerの名を冠した曲が２曲。
Fagen＆Beckerは自分達の嗜好に忠実に仕事して…もとい、遊んでいるな、という感。
他の曲に関しても、何だか「パロディ」っぽい。ジャンル分けがしやすい、
と言った方が語弊が少ないだろうか。
例えば＃８はブルースで、E.Claptonが弾き語っても違和感は無いだろうし、
＃９は誰がどう聴いてもウェスタンである。つまり分かりやすいのだ。
憧憬とも冷やかしとも取れ、愉快。
また、＃１、＃３、＃７や＃10では美しい（＃10はしかし哀しい）旋律に浸る事が出来る。
特に＃３は、Fagenのこんなに優しいヴォーカルを誰が想像できただろうか。
惚れ直した。

ジャズ、ブルーズ、R&Bなどさまざまなスタイルの音楽をフェイゲンの歌という縦糸でまとめた佳作です。
1曲目のイメージのせいでしょうか、ボサノヴァのCDように静かに流しておくといつの間にか部屋の空気が和らいでいる、そんな音です。
メロディラインの冴えもあくまでもさりげなく。
後期の緻密さがちょっとしんどいときにはこのアルバムがベストです。

ダンはこの3rdから大々的にスタジオミュージシャンを導入することになるのだが、
それについてフェイゲンとベッカーはライナーノーツにこう記している。
｢バーズ､ビーチボーイズそれにビートルズでさえセッションプレイヤー
を使って素晴らしい成果を残している。ジャズの時代のバンドリーダー達
は言うまでもないしね｣
というわけで完成した本作には、アメリカを代表する超一流スタジオミュージシャン
達による印象的なプレイが満載である。
再びフェイゲン＆ベッカーのライナーノーツから抜粋しよう。
｢Jim GordonとJeff Porcaroの贅沢なダブルドラムが堪能できる"Parker's Band"
"Riki"におけるMichael Omartianのクリスタルのようなピアノ、"Any Major Dude"
でのChuck Raineyの甘くソウルフルなベース（中略）もう以前のバンドスタイル
には後戻りできなくなった｣
