　完全主義から脱し、UKロックを思わせる穏やかで浮遊するメロディーを導入し始めた8作目。「ヒーローの光と影」をテーマにしたコンセプト・アルバムでもある。現代的なタッチは前作「Brave」同様だが、キャッチーなポップ・センスは減退。メロディーとバックが不協和音になっている曲が増えるなど、現代音楽の要素が強くなっている。

　Tr.1「ガスパチョ」のヴァース部分はまさにその典型。世界王者ボクサーの家庭内暴力を描いた曲で、♪服に付いたその染みは、本当にガスパチョ（スープの一種）ですか？ という問いかけが深い余韻を残す。
　Tr.3「ビューティフル」は、UKロック・バラードの人気曲。2種類シングルが切られ、久しぶりにヒットを記録した。美しいものを踏みつけるこの世の中に、美しくある信念を持て、と歌う。
　Tr.5「アウト・オブ・ディス・ワールド」は高速艇で世界記録に挑戦し、湖に散ったレーサーを歌う。美しく漂う旋律の裏に、深い悲しみが宿っている、そんな曲だ。

　そしてハイライトがタイトル曲 Tr.6。ドラム・ループも使った電子的な曲だが、高い叙情性を持つメロディーにより、バンド最高傑作だ！と言う人もいる。栄光を掴んだヒーローが、何時しか日の光さえ恐れるようになる。華やかな舞台のすぐ向こうにある、人知れぬ孤独。このアルバムはそんな世界を描こうとしている様に思う。

ボーカルのフィッシュが脱退後、スティーブ・ホーガスをボーカルに加えたマリリオンは、１９９４年に傑作「ＢＲＡＶＥ」を出したわね。虐待による精神的ショックで話すこともできない錯乱状態の少女が大きなつり橋の高速道路わきで発見された事件をモチーフに社会の病巣を抉り出したコンセプチュアルな問題作として話題になったのよね。で、それは、いいアルバムだと思うけど、個人的には、わずか１年後に発表された、このアルバムのほうのが音楽性はメチャ高いと思うのよ。こちらも一応ボクサーをテーマにしたコンセプト性はあるけど、音作りのほうに力を注いだ感がして、音楽性で買いだわね。

このアルバムで顕著なのは、快活でリズミックな音処理で軽く聴かせる曲と、従来の重厚な音世界のコントラストが今まで以上に明確になっていること。

「CannibalSurf Babe」ではビーチボーイズのブライアン・ウィルソンに題材をとったニヒルな視点をキャッチーなサウンドに乗せて聴かせてくれる。かと思うと、個人的には彼らのレパートリーの中でも１，２を争う名曲だと信じて疑わない、詩もメロディも美しすぎて涙が止まらない「Beautiful」があったり、そのアルバムとしての起伏の激しさが素晴らしい作品。

ボーナスディスクには、アルバム未収録の、先行シングル「Icon」が収録されているが、この曲によりこのアルバムのコンセプトが「偶像」であることが分かる。前述のウィルソン氏への着眼も納得。
