   レインボー、ディープ・パープルといえば、HR/HMの歴史を語る上で外せない英国のグループ。この2大グループの中心人物が、才人・奇人で名高い名ギタリスト、リッチー・ブラックモアだ。彼が1970年代中盤に結成したレインボーの「呼び物」ともいえるのが、アルバムごとのメンバーチェンジ。曲のイメージを左右するヴォーカルのパートでは、ヘヴィなロニー・ジェイムス・ディオ、熱唱型のグラハム・ボネット、ソフトなジョー・リン・ターナーというタイプの異なるヴォーカリストを起用して独自の音楽の世界を広げていった。
   1978年の作品となるこのアルバムは、骨の髄からハードロッカーのロニー、ドラマーに「音楽業界の渡り鳥」、コージー・パウエルという顔合わせ。リッチーがこの2人と組むのは3作目になる。3人の力と技が伯仲し、様式美を生かしつつも気合いの入ったハードなサウンドを叩き出している。傑作は中世的フレイバー漂うメロディ進行の<4>。次々と独特のフレーズを紡ぎ出すリッチーのまさに独壇場である。ほかには、腹に響くハード・チューン<1>、レインボーの代表曲としてあげられる<5>を収録。レインボー第1期の名作として必聴の1枚。（富良仁 枝実）

前作同様コージーのドラミングが炸裂！

タイトに飛び跳ねるビートが印象的な１「Long Live Rock'N'Roll」
中世ヨーロッパの雰囲気、魔術的、呪術的なリズムパターンの
４「Gates Of Babylon」、疾走感、緩急自在、タイム間のコントロール
どれをとっても完璧な５「kill The King」など、あまりに洗練され精密で
エネルギッシュで荒々しくて猛々しい、なおかつ表現力豊かという
ドラミングには素直に脱帽です。

もちろんロニーの歌声には窓もふるえる迫力があって

リッチーのギタープレイは円熟味をおびている。

バンドとしてのアンサンブルも申し分なし！

kill the kingから聴き始めた方がしっくりするのは何故でしょうか？
ライブで演奏される機会が多かったからかもしれませんが、なんと言っても捨て曲がないアルバムだと言えます。
キャッチーな曲ばかりなのはアメリカを意識したから。でもそれで世界制覇を成し遂げることになる。今だからこそ聴き返したい名作です。

リッチーがアメリカ進出を目論んで制作したRAINBOWの3rdアルバム

残念ながらアメリカではブレイクしなかったが、ハードロック史上に名を残す Kill The King をはじめとして、ロニージェームスディオ、リッチーブラックモア、コージーパウエルという顔ぶれによる様式美ハードロックが聴ける。未だに最高！という人が多いアルバムでもある。

日本人の私が聞くと最初のリフでグッとくるのだが、やっぱり、王様を殺せ！！とか叫んでる曲はアメリカ人には受け入れられなかったのか？？
ロック好きには是非聞いておいて欲しいアルバム。　今の耳で聞くと、音質的に多少古くさい感じもするが、楽曲・演奏は素晴らしい。

＃でも私は「バビロン派」
