Kinksが自らの方向を大きく転換し、80年代に米国へ飛び出していった頃の傑作です。冒頭"State of confusion"イントロでの切れのいいコードの刻みからして彼等の意気込みと自信を感じます。
Ray Davisのペンも冴えており、彼等久々の大ヒットとなった"Come dancin'"（彼の数ある名曲中でも十指に入ると確信します）、"Don't forget the dance"もさすがの出来ですが、"State of confusion"、"Heart of gold"などもKinks風味をを十分維持しながら米国市場向けパワーアップに成功した見事な楽曲と思います。
Kinksでは"Muswell hillbillies", "Show-biz"の頃、また"Soap opera", "Schoolboy"の頃も大好きですが、米国向けに筋肉質な音作りを心がけながらも、Kinksらしい空気をしっかりブレンドした本作も同じくらい気に入っています。
Village greenやSunny afternoonを聴いて以来、Stonesと同じくらいの長さのお付き合いとなる彼等の作品群ですが、ふと思い浮かぶフレーズ/曲の多さは本作もかなりのものです。

アリスタ時代になって、よりハードなギター・サウンドを前面に押し出すようになったキンクス。そんな彼らが、いわゆる原点回帰、イギリスっぽい音へと再び嗜好を変えていく、その狭間で揺れる頃のアルバム。次作「Word Of Mouth」でのＵＫ回帰、というのが一般的な見方ですが、僕はこのアルバムから明らかな方向転換を感じます。大ヒットした「カム・ダンシング」は言うに及ばず、シングルカットされた残りの２曲「Don't Forget To Dance」「State Of Confusion」、それぞれが、リズムの組み立てこそ前作までのハード・ロック路線を受け継いでいますが、メロディにはイギリスっぽい哀愁が感じられます。当時クリッシー・ハインドとの仲が危機的状況にあったレイ・デイヴィス。「どーでもいいや、勝手にしろよ！」だったり「ちょっとだけ昔の気持ちにに戻ろうよ」だったり、詩の面でもかなり赤裸々に揺れ動いています。そこがまた本作の魅力かもしれません。
ボーナストラックもオイシイ！特に「Long Distance」は、個人的にはキンクスナンバーの中で10本の指に入るくらい好き。

アルバム「LOW　BUDGET」「GIVE　THE　PEOPLE　WHAT　THEY　WANT」とアメリカの
マーケットでも受け入れられるようになり、そしてその存在を決定ずけたアルバムです。
特にこのアルバムから「カム･ダンシングCome Dancing」「思い出のダンスDon't Forget to Dance 」
という２曲もシングルが大ヒットしました。
このアルバムもシングル曲だけでなく、オープニングの「夜なき街角State of Confusion」から
力強くはじまり、無駄な捨て曲がありません。非常に聞きやすいアルバムではないでしょうか？
