タイトルからライヴ盤と勘違いしてしまいそうであるが、スタジオ録音盤である。
これは、キャノンボール・アダレイ名義のアルバムであるが、もう１人の主人公であるジョン・コルトレーンとの双頭クインテットと言ってもよい。
付き合っているメンバーは、当時のマイルスのリズムセクションであることから、つまり御大抜きで行われたセッションである。
１曲目の"LIMEHOUSE BLUES"からこの２人はアクセル全開でソロを吹きまくる。２人の４小節交換には思わず息を呑む。
２曲目の"STARS FELL ON ALABAMA"はリラックスムードたっぷりのバラードであり、多弁家のキャノンボールの独壇場。
当時、チャーリー・パーカーの後継者の最有力候補であり、アルトサックスの王道を歩んでいた巨匠である。
一方のコルトレーンも５曲目でキャノンボールとバラード勝負。２人のアプローチの違いは歴然とする。
この後の彼らの活躍は言うまでもなく、そんな彼らの成長過程でも最も重要な時期の記録であり、かつ、とてもスリリングであり爽快であり、何よりも何回も聴きたくなる・・そんな銘盤である。

｢A to T｣というのはアルトとテナーという意味だけじゃないぞ！このアルバムは...
1,4→アップテンポのアドリブバトル
2,5→美しいメロディーをしっとりと聴かせるバラード
3,6→その中間のミドル・テンポの曲
といった感じでサックス物のジャズを聴く楽しみ、喜びが詰まった玉手箱なのだという意味だ！
｢これを良いと思わない人は〜なんて聴かない方がいい｣みたいな文句はこういうアルバムにこそふさわしい。

面白いのはA面B面(僕イケメン!)の曲調の構成が対になっているという所である。まさにバトルだ！
しかし個人的にはキャノンボールとコルトレーンは寄り添って楽しんで演奏している様な印象の方が強い。
サウンド的にもキャノンボールはテナー、コルトレーンはアルトみたいな音を鳴らしてる場面が多いので
正直言っちまうと、どっちがどっちだか分かんねえよ！(笑)
3,4,6の冒頭部分で2人のサックスが両方右チャンネルに同時収録されてるのはシンクロ効果を狙ってか？
その後お互いのソロ部分になると左右に振り分けられるという変なミックスなのだが(笑)
(左チャンネルのサックスがソロを取る場面では右はピアノだけになってしまう。)

そして個人的に最も気に入ってるのはジミー・コブのドラムだ！
先述したように様々なタイプの曲が収録されてるので色んなプレイが楽しめる。(ドラムソロも有り)
あの人が居ないからかどうかは知らんが、開放的で元気いっぱいな演奏が多いぞ！
逆に2ではムードたっぷりのブラシプレイも楽しめる。
サウンド(とくにタイコの響き)も素晴らしいので大して知識は無いが最高傑作と暫定させて頂きました！

※ちなみに俺はデジパックとか紙ジャケが大っ嫌いだ！

マイルス・デイビスのセクステットに在籍中、シカゴに客演した際に録音した名盤。いわゆるボス、マイルスの目を盗んで決行したスリリングなスタジオ録音である。結果的にはコルトレーンとキャノンボールというテナーとアルトのダブル・サックスのフロントラインだが、当時の二人はマイルスの元で互いに刺激しあい、影響を与えあいながら急激に成長を遂げていた時期でもあった。コルトレーンはモードとシーツ・オフ・サウンズの完成を、キャノンボールもモーダルなセンスと持ち前のアドリブに磨きをかけていた。「ライムハウス・ブルース」ではトロンボーンのＪ＆Ｋのように類似したサックスが双生児のように絡みながらもそれぞれの個性と早いテンポのアドリブで火花を散らしている。「アラバマに星墜ちて」ではキャノンボールのゆったりとしたソロが聞かれ、ボスがいないゆったりと寛いだ雰囲気が伝わってくる。このアルバムに関していえば、キャノンボールがコルトレーンに競り勝っている印象を受ける。独立後キャノンボールはファンキーな人気コンボで大成功し、数々の代表作をのこすことになるが、僕はこのアルバムでのキャノンボールこそ彼の本領を発揮した最高傑作だといえるのではないかと思っている。ちなみに、サムシング・エルスもイン・シカゴも実質上というよりは名義上のリーダーだが、案外そんなときに傑作を残しているというのも興味深い事実である。
