   1960年代、マイルス・ディヴィス・クインテットの一員として頭角を現したハービー・ハンコック。彼がリーダーとなって作りあげた、60年代の彼らの代表作が本作だ。
   斬新なハーモニー感覚でそれまでのハードパップ・ピアニストとは一線を画したハンコックは、このアルバムでより開放的なサウンドの響きをジャズグループで表現しようとした。トランペットのフレディ・ハバードとテナーサックスのジョージ・コールマンが作りだすアンサンブルは、明らかに50年代のジャズとは異なった雰囲気を伝えている。
   70年代にはファンクビートにも手を染めるハンコックだが、この時期は完全にアコースティックな音楽を目指している。いわゆる60年代新主流派といわれたジャズスタイルの典型的な演奏例としても有名である。（後藤雅洋）

Maiden Voyage is a masterpiece of the school, with Hancock's enduring compositions like "Maiden Voyage" and "Dolphin Dance" mingling creative tension and calm repose with strong melodies and airy, suspended harmonies that give form to his evocative sea imagery. ビル・エヴァンスの後にマイルスバンドにやって来たピアニスト、ハービー・ハンコック。
彼はビル・エヴァンスが切り拓いた叙情的な表現やモードの手法を既に完璧にマスターしていた。
また、そしてマイルスがそうであったように、７０年代にはファンク、そして最近では
ヒップ・ホップやドラムン・ベースに至るまで貪欲にジャンルを吸収し、完全に自分の中に取り込み、
常に時代の先を見据て行動できる優れた音楽家である。

このアルバム製作時、ハービーはマイルスバンドに在籍中であったが
マイルスが療養中であったため各メンバーはそれぞれソロ活動中であった。
そのメンバー「＋α」でハービーがリーダーを執ったのがこのアルバム。
にもかかわらず、マイルスバンドとは異なる感触を持った作品を生み出した。

タイトルが示すとおり、壮大な海をアルバム全体のモチーフとして扱っていて緩やかなトーンに統一されている。
いつもは高等数学的で奔放なドラミングのトニー・ウィリアムスのスネアも抑制されていて無数の小波のように散りばめられている。
ハービーのピアノも広大な海の息遣い表現すべく繊細なタッチで、
ロン・カーターのベースはぴったりそれらにくっついてうねりを生み出す。
管楽器陣の紡ぐ音は大海原に反射する太陽光であり、あたかもその上に存在する空間そのものを照らし出してるようだ。

海がテーマとして扱われて、しかもそれが似合うジャズというのは本当に数少ないわけだが、
ここではハービーの目論見通り海の雄大さ、そしてそこで育まれる神秘的な生命の流麗ないとなみまでどこまでも美しく描かれている。

演奏が良く、背伸びしない自分の感覚で聞くことのできる作品なので、ジャズ初心者のうちに手に入れて、ずっと聴いていくことのできるアルバムだと感じます。
アルバムの最初の「処女航海」という曲ですが、その緊張感がとてもよく表現されいて、聞いていてドキドキしてきます。
それなのに、次の曲は"THE EYE OF THE HURRICANE"　
飛ばしますが、さいごは"DOLPHIN DANCE"　
・・・古典的なストーリー展開（アーティストの意図であるかは不明）ですが、折々に聞きたくなる内容で、いつの間にか聞き込んでしまう、演奏的にも聞き込んでしまってよいアルバムだと思います。

完璧だ。

抒情に富んだわびさびの利いたテナー。喜怒哀楽のある力強いトランペット。George Coleman(ts)とFreddie Hubbard(tp)の表現力豊かなプレイが素晴らしい。リーダーハンコックの作り出すビートのキャンバスの上に壮大なる海の絵巻を書き上げていく。ホリゾンタルなコールマンとヴァーティカルなハバートが良いコントラストを成す。その色彩感覚は限りなく繊細で豊かだ。リズミックなタッチで、「波」を表現するかのようなリズムセクションの波動も見事。的確なリーダーシップで航海図を描いて行くハンコックのピアノ。臨機応変なトニーのドラムス。やはり彼は柔らかなものをやらせても上手い。しっかりボトムをキープするカーターのベース。文句なしだ。

海をテーマにしたコンセプトアルバム。「初めて航海」に出た船が、「ハリケーン」に遭遇し、「小さな生き物」を発見し、「適者生存のルール」を体験し、悠然と泳ぐ「イルカの群れ」に出会う。目を閉じ耳を済ませて聞けば、収録された曲のタイトルの情景が浮かんでくるような壮大で美しいジャズ物語である。

"Empyrean Isles"と"Speak Like A Child"の間にリリースされた、ハービー・ハンコックのブルーノート第５作。１９６５年５月の録音で、Tony Williams(ds), Ron Carter(b)（二人は当時のマイルス・デイビス・クインテットでハービーとリズムセクションを組んでいた）とFreddie Hubbard(tp)が前作から続いて、元メンバーのGeorge Coleman(ts)がトラで参加している。ショーターでなく彼を呼んだことが、成功要因の一つに上げられるだろう。前述の２作と合わせて、ブルーノートのハンコック３部作と言えよう。
