　昔むかし、なんの予備知識もなく惹かれるままに買ったマーキュリーの輸入盤LP。いい匂いがしたからだ。ホルストの『1組』と『2組』、ヴォーン＝ウィリアムスの『民謡組曲』『トッカータ・マルツィアーレ』の4曲が入っていた。これらが吹奏楽の定番中の定番だということさえ知らなかったのだが、すぐに気に入り、よく言う「擦り切れるほど」聴いたアルバムとなった。

　テンポ設定、節回し、ソノリティ、演奏技術、どれをとっても最高水準の演奏だ。吹奏楽をやっている人にはこれ以上はないお手本であり、これ以上はない目標でもある。じっさいこれを聴いてからというもの、ほかのバンドの演奏を聴いても満足できなかった。これほどマシンのような正確さをもち、各パートの動きがきちっと聴きとれ、なおかつゆとりと共感に満ちたあたたかい演奏には出会ったことがない。

　CDには別のアルバムから採られたメニンの『カンツォーナ』、パーシケッティの『賛歌』、H.O.リード（A.リードではない）の『フィエスタ・メキシカーナ』が収められている。メニン作品は初期バロックの曲を素材にしているようだが、ポリフォニックでかなり難易度の高いもの。イーストマンの鮮やかな演奏に驚かされる。深みと変化のあるパーシケッティ作品、祝祭的な盛り上がりをみせるリード作品も聴き応えがある。

　録音は英国作品4曲が1955年、のこる3曲が1954年。古いモノラル録音だが臨場感たっぷりの素晴らしい仕上がり。マーキュリーの録音技術にも星5つを献呈したい。

　ちょっとビックリした。
この音の輝き、勢い、切れ味。これが本当にワンポイントマイクによる１９５４年モノラル録音の音なのか？
最新デジタル録音でもつまらないディスクはたくさんあるというのに、これは聴いていて楽しい。
（但し残響の多い穏やかな録音を好む方にはダメかもしれません。）
　でも、その秘密は録音だけではなかったです。
この演奏、後のメジャーオケの主席になる優秀な若手奏者が多数参加していたという。
確かな技術とフェネル氏の情熱の結合！
　好みで言えばタイトなスナッピーの音が抜群でリズムにも迷いが無い小太鼓、センス良くチューニングされたトムトム、
tuttiでも埋もれないカスタ＆テンプルブロック、皮の音が弾ける大太鼓など、打楽器群がｇｏｏｄ！　
曲でいえばやはり打楽器群が暴れまくるメキシコの祭り「Aztec Dance」が最高に面白い。
２拍子系と３拍子系が交錯する難曲を見事に表現している。
「Carnival」も雰囲気たっぷりでワクワクさせられる。
　ちなみにジャケットはリバーシブル。でも、オモテ面はメキシコの祭りの挿絵のほうが良いと思いました。
