   帝王マイルス・デイヴィスのグループから独立したジョン・コルトレーンは、マッコイ・タイナー、エルヴィン・ジョーンズという彼にとっての最良のメンバーとカルテットを結成。本盤の録音に臨んだ。
   本盤のタイトル曲は、リチャード・ロジャースとオスカー・ハマースタイン2世のミュージカル「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック」の挿入歌。しかし録音された時点では、名作といわれた「映画」はまだ封切られていない。舞台での人気曲ではあっても、この演奏がファンに支持されたのは、3拍子によるジャズの心地よさ、それを叩くドラマーのダイナミックさ、そして何よりもコルトレーンの吹くソプラノ・サックスがこのメロディに非常に良くなじんだからである。コルトレーン自身も気に入り、生涯の愛奏曲となった。晩年にはそれこそ凄まじい演奏になってしまうが、本盤では、かわいらしいメロディを、突き抜けるようなソプラノ・サックスで丁寧（ていねい）に吹いている。そこが人気の秘密であろう。ほかにもガーシュイン、コール・ポーターという大作曲家のスタンダード曲を演奏している人気盤。（高木宏真）

ジョン・コルトレーンが際立ったジャズマンであるポイントはいくつかある。彼ほどの巨人は単純に演奏がすごいといったレベルを超えた思想や理念を持ったスケールのプレイヤーだ。しかし、60年代に入って数多いサックス・プレイヤーの中でも際立った演奏者としてのコルトレーンを称えても、なお余りある功績として挙げられるのが、ソプラノ・サックスへのチャレンジであり、My favorite Thingsというポップチューンを誰よりも早く、しかも個性的に演奏した着眼点の秀逸さであろう。親しみやすいメロディでありながら、ソプラノの飄々としたサウンドには多くのジャズファンが度肝を抜かした。このアルバムはそうしたコルトレーンの60年代の門出を祝う新境地であるし、この後延々とこの曲を演奏し続けた彼の原点でもある。My favorite Things最高の演奏はというとニューポートジャズフェスティバルのロイ・ヘインズを擁したライブ盤かもしれないが、記念碑的な意味でのこの演奏は決して色あせることが無く、コルトレーン・ジャズの一つの金字塔として、聳え立っている。

表題曲は、映画「ダンサー・イン・ザ・ダーク」のラストに用いられ、レコード店の店頭に並んだこともある。文句なしのコルトレーン、最高傑作である。コルトレーンのサックスは生真面目な、少し思い詰めたような音がする。ソニー・ロリンズような自己客観化の視点からくるドライさはない。簡単に言えば、一生懸命な人なのだ。彼の音色には「死」の影も見え隠れする。一生懸命に命をすりへらしているとでも言うべきか。このアルバムを聴くと、そんな彼が「わたしの好きなもの」を思い浮かべながら、悲しみを乗り越えようとする姿が目に浮かぶのだ。一日中、何度も何度も聞き返した。

初めてこの曲を聴いたのは高校生の頃だった。映画「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック」の中の歌で、作曲はコール・ポーターだ。なんて知らなかった。ソプラノ・サックスがコルネットやクラリネットのように高い音色を出すコルトレーンの奏法に驚いた。私の知る限り、コルトレーンはこのアルバムを含めて３回「マイ・フェーバリット・シングス」を録音しているが、後の２回はテナーサックス。コルトレーンを聴くと「諦観」「狂気」「暗黒」などのキーワードが思い浮かぶ。ジャズ喫茶の片隅で、じっとこのアルバムに聴き入った青春時代を持つ人も多いだろう。時々、無性に聴きたくなる。（松本敏之）
