映画『トレインスポティング』のエンディングテーマ「Born Slippy」（1995年）のヒットによって、UKクラブ・シーンから一躍世界的なスターダムにのぼりつめたアンダーワールド。1996年の『Second Thoughest In The Infants』から3年の時を経てリリースされたこの3rdアルバムで、彼らは、これまでのキャリアの集大成と言うべき、非常に成熟したエレクトロニックなダンス・ミュージックを創り上げることに成功した。
オープニングは11分にもおよぶ、アンダーワールド流のディープハウス。ヴォコーダーを用いた淡々とした展開が、突如アッパーな曲調にスイッチし、最初のピークを形成する<1>、反復される壮大なピアノの旋律とともにヴォーカルのKarl Hyde、が“push”としつように繰り返す<2>、往年のミュンヘン・ディスコのベースラインを採用した<4>、煌めくようなシンセがトライバルなリズムの上を流れていく<8>などのスピーディーでフロア・ライクなダンス・トラックと、透き通ったメロディーに乗せてKarlが穏やかに歌う<3>やニューウェイヴ調の<6>などの内省的なトラックがバランスよく配置され、起伏に富んだ心地よいサウンドスケープを堪能することができる。また、ラストには映画『バットマン＆ロビン』のために制作された、ハードエッヂな<11>も収録されている。
多彩なリズムの組み立て、音色の美しさ、ヴォーカルとダンス・トラックの絶妙なバランス、曲調の幅広さなど、どの点をとってもこれまでとは比較にならないほど高い完成度を誇る作品と言えるだろう。（山田次郎）
