Keyboardist Neil Larsen's 1978 jazz-fusion release on Horizon Records features the horn work of soloist & session tenor Michael Brecker, who'd previously worked with Jaco Pastorius, Aerosmith and his own Brecker Brothers, among others. Includes: the title track, 'Sudden Samba', 'Last Tango in Paris' & five others.

なんといっても名作中の名作。１曲目のサドゥンサンバでは、ラーセンのオルガンサウンドに脱帽。随所にラーセンの魅力がキラリと光る、フュージョンファンならずとも是非聴いていただきたい一枚です。

中学の頃に初めてこのLPを聞きました。
あのオルガンとファズのかかったギターの息のあったユニゾンを聞いた時からもうずっと虜です。リピューマらしい抑えた音ですが、お互いソロパートになると解き放たれたように情感たっぷりに弾きまくる。ラストタンゴインパリに参加してるブレッカーも吹きまくる。このダイナミズムが彼らの妙。

ハイギアと違ってこちらはアンディ・ニューマークとウィリーウィークスの粘っこいリズム隊。これはこれでいい。端正でいて情念が秘められてて何度でも聞けるCDです。

ラテン系のリズム、キャッチーでメロウな旋律、ギターとのユニゾンで奏でられるテーマ…。ニール・ラーセンのアルバムはこれらのパターンが網羅されているが「飽きる」という事が全くない。作品としても駄作がなく、まるで湧き水のごとく繰り出されるフレーズは時代を超えた今聴いても古さを感じさせない。
1971年のデビューから今日に至るまで、所属するレコード会社の活動停止やバンドの解散などの苦難を乗り越えて活動をし続けているが、ニール・ラーセンのハモンドはそういった暗さを微塵も感じさせない明るさとノリを聴かせてくれる。この作品は78年に発表した名作中の名作。この時から既に彼の作風は改良の必要が全くないほどの完成度を誇り、30年が経過した今でも「フュージョン界の名作」と謳われているほどだ。
シンセサイザーが登場し、多重録音やさまざまな楽器の音を作れるようになった時代も彼はハモンドを手放す事はなかった。その一貫したポリシー、鍵盤楽器への一過言を持った彼ならではのプライドと才能が感じられる。その中でもこの作品は、誰が聴いても絶対気に入ってもらえる不滅の名作だと思う。
