   マイルス・ディヴィスは59年の『カインド・オブ・ブルー』で、新しいアドリブ法「モード」を完成させた。参加したビル・エヴァンスの貢献度は絶大だが、エヴァンス自身もヒントをつかむ。
   同年末、スコット・ラファロ(B)、ポール・モチアン(Dr)というメンバーで結成されたビル・エヴァンス・トリオは、この方法を自らのトリオで実践する。演目は以前より演奏するスタンダードナンバーだが、アプローチにモードを応用してみる。簡単に言うと、メロディが乗って進行していくコード進行というものを大きくとらえ、アドリブの可能性を広げるということ。
   必ずしもリズムを刻まないベース&ドラムスは、ピアノと共に音楽を引っ張っていく。それまでのピアノと、それを伴奏するベース&ドラムではなく、三者対等にジャズを演奏していくことでスリリングなジャズが誕生した。その記念すべきアルバムは、以上の能書きなど知らなくても楽しめる、人気ピアニストの人気盤でもある。（高木宏真）

星の王子様の演奏は、まさにスタンダード。軽い感じのペリズスコープも素晴らしい。楽しく美しく、メロディアス硬いタッチの音色、シリアスな間合いが真似できないビルエバ節をかもし出しています。

「会話を邪魔しない大人のＪＡＺＺ」はじめ聴いたときそう思った。
大事なヒトと二人だけで聴いて欲しい。
精密機械のように細かいメロディ-が作られ流れてくるが、難しくはない。
このピアノ・トリオのメロディ-が流れてくれば魔法のように
ロマンチックな風が辺りをつつんでくれる。

「ワルツ・フォー・デビー」「アンダーカレント」「サンデー・アット・ビレジバンガード」と並ぶエヴァンスのベストの１枚。ＣＤではオリジナルになかった別テークの「枯葉」が入っているが、やはりオリジナル版の「枯葉」がいい。スパイラル状に絡みつくエヴァンスとスコット・ラファロとのインタープレイを聴いて欲しい。天才ベーシスト、ラファロの死後いろいろなベーシストと共演しているが、やはりラファロ、モチアン（ドラム）とのトリオの演奏を超えるものはない。秋の寂しい日に聴くと、セントラルパークに枯葉を拾いに行きたくなる。(松本敏之）
