　90年代のＵＫバンドの中でも屈指のひねくれものだった、ポール・ドレイパー率いるマンサン。このアルバムは特にひねくれてて、それ故「画期的なギターロックアルバム」として少なからぬ人々に愛されています。3分ポップに仕上げても良いはずだった冒頭の表題曲"Six"が、右往左往と強引に、そしてごく自然に変調を繰り返す時点で、このアルバムの分裂症的な凄まじさに圧倒されるはずです。

　時にアグレッシヴに、時に官能的に、あらゆるエフェクトを尽くしてマンサンがマンサンたる所以を生み出しているチャドの変幻自在なギター、また、"Negative""Anti Everything"といった曲で唐突な変拍子にしっかり対応しているリズム隊。このアルバムは観念的であると同時に、その観念を支えるバンドの演奏力、爆発力があり、それが常に緊迫したテンションを保っているんです。チャドは90年代を象徴するギタリストとしてもっとその名を挙げられるべきなんですよ。

　そしてどれだけ難解で目まぐるしい展開をしようと、このアルバムがキャッチーなメロディで支配されていること、それが重要なんです。「死んだら忘れられるだけさ」「人間関係は虚しく儚い」とシニカルに繰り返す"Legacy"も、「僕は下を見る　気分はネガティヴ」とタイトルそのままに真っ向から歌う"Negative"も、しっかり力強いポップソングとして成立しちゃってます。完璧主義、とか、パーフェクトといった単語が、このバンドには本当よく似合います。

1998年に発表された2ndアルバム。
鳴り物入りでデビューし、1stアルバムは全英1位を獲得したバンドが作り上げたアルバムは、耽美的な前作とはうって変わり、実験的で、非常に難解な作品であった。1曲目の“Six”から展開が目まぐるしく変わる曲であり、アルバムを通じてその流れは変わらない。とにかく前作とは別人と思えるほど野心的な作品に仕上がっている。
1回聞いただけではそのアルバムの真価は分からないと言われるが、その言葉がこのアルバムにはぴたりと当てはまる。
（確か）レディオヘッドのT・ヨークもこのアルバムを評価していたと思う。確かにこのアルバムの、もはやギターバンドという範疇を取っ払った実験性は、かの『KID A』にも影響を与えている感じがする。
当時のイギリスのメディアはもとより、リリースから10年近く経った今でも正当な評価がなされていない1枚ではあるが、隠れた傑作であると思う。
その後、2000年に3rdアルバムをリリースするが、『SIX』に比べると凡庸なロックになってしまい、2003年に残念ながら解散。ボーカルのポール・ドレイパーは才能があるので、再び表舞台に上がってきてもらいたいと願う。

なんといっても、私はこれがMansunの最高傑作だと思います。
ヴォーカルの甘い声、そして穏やかな曲。
夜聴くのにぴったりです。
