Though it was made largely to help disentangle Hendrix from a thorny contractual dispute, 1970's live Band of Gypsys LP--six tracks pulled from four concerts recorded over New Year's Eve and Day in 1969-70--stands as one of Hendrix's most remarkable guitar statements, and an integral part of his recorded legacy. This two-CD set accounts for a large portion of the remainder of those concerts, and though uneven and ragged in spots, it offers some minor revelations. Highlights include a stunning jam in a revamped "Stone Free," "Auld Lang Syne" as only Hendrix could have played it, a playful "Who Knows" with an improvised New Year's lyric, alternate versions of the guitar showcases "Machine Gun" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," and a downright weird "Earth Blues." Drummer Buddy Miles (with bassist Billy Cox, the Band of Gypsys in full) takes the spotlight on the funky--if very out-of-tune--"Stop." Clearly, Hendrix did well to select the cream of these gigs for the far more consistent original Gypsys album. Still, as his legend deepens, thirsty Hendrix devotees will find plenty of refreshment here. --James Rotondi

黒人のみで結成されたジミのユニット、バンド・オブ・ジプシーズのライブアルバムは以前から出ている「バンド・オブ・ジプシーズ」が有名ですが、このアルバムは1969年の大晦日（アメリカでは大晦日とは言わないでしょうけど）から1970年の元旦にかけての４ステージの模様をピックアップして収めたものです。前出の「バンド・オブ・ジプシーズ」とは、1970年元旦の２ステージ目「We Gotta Live Together」の1曲のみが重複していますが、それ以外の曲はオフィシャルとしては全て初出の音源なので、安心して購入してください。２ＣＤというボリュームはかなり聴き応えありますね。

これまでに出ていたジミのライブ盤は、いいとこ取りの音源ばかりで、ステージとしての連続性が感じられなかったのですが、ここでは実際の演奏順ではないにせよ、2日間のステージを収めただけに、当時のライブのリアル感がじかに伝わってきます。とくにDISC2の冒頭では新年のカウントダウンまで収められていて、70年代の幕開けへの期待感とは裏腹に、数ヵ月後にはジミ自身が亡くなってしまうという現実との狭間に、無常感を感じえずにはいられません。

「バンド・オブ・ジプシーズ」では、その驚異の爆音で我々を驚かせた「Machine Gun」は、2テイク収められていますが、ベストはやはり「バンド・オブ・ジプシーズ」のテイクでしょう。ここでのテイクは残念ですが、そこまでのポテンシャルは感じられません。考えてみれば、これだけ濃い演奏を1日２ステージもこなしているわけで、そうでなくても体調の好不調の波が激しい彼だけに、通しで聴くとそんな「アラ」も見えてきます。そんな部分をも含めて、生のジミを感じたい人にお勧めです。出費はかさみますが、まず「バンド・オブ・ジプシーズ」を聴いてから、本作を聴くと全体の流れがわかってより深く楽しめると思います。

ジミヘンを初めて聴くなら、エクスペリエンス時代から入った方が、分かりやすいと思う。パープル・ヘイズとかの有名曲を一応押さえてから、フィルモアライヴ（これで晩年の演奏になってしまうのが悲しいが）を聴くと、変化がわかって面白いと思う。
フィルモアライヴは、すでに、Band Of Gypsysというタイトルで発売されていて、そちらも秀逸だが、本作品は、その拾遺というか、違う演奏が収められている。
ジミヘンというとギャビーだのグワーンだのというイメージがつきまとうが、このライヴでは、そういう派手さは陰を潜めている。ハデハデなジミヘンを聴きたい人には物足りないだろう。

また、全体にファンクっぽい雰囲気、メンバー全員が黒人だし、漂っているが、ジミのギターは、黒人という集団意識ではなく、もっと個人的な感性を追求しているように聴こえる。そのためか、あからさまなファンクではない。
だから、セックスマシン的なコテコテのノリにはウゲっとなる人も、十分楽しめるはずだ。

いずれにせよ、ジミのギターや音楽は彼の人間そのものである。どんな演奏であっても、それは常に彼自身を表しているとして受け止めるしかない。そういう意味では、他人の評論は無意味だ。
とにかく聴いてみましょう。
音質は、メチャメチャ良いというわけでもないが、十分なものだし、客観的に見て演奏も手抜きがなく、まとまっている。

昔、ジミの怪しげなライヴアルバムを買って後悔した経験のある人も、これなら大丈夫ですよ。

ジミがエクスペリエンス結成前に結んだ契約書を解消するためにキャピタルレコードのためにアルバムを作ることで方向性が決まった。この時、ミッチミッチェルがイギリスに帰っていたので、”友達を助けようぜ！”という合図の元に、バディマイルスが合流。ジミ、ビリーコックスとバンドオブジプシーズを結成。ライブ版を作るためにこのライブが開かれた。この一部は既にキャピタルからバンドオブジプシーズという名のライブ版が出されているが、今回のアルバムで殆ど完全に近い状態で出された。

ファンが待ち焦がれていた全容が見えてくる。これだけでも貴重なライブ版。ルーツが一緒の３人での演奏はタイトでヘビー。マイルスデイビスがマシーンガンを聞いて、”俺はこれがやりたかったんだ！！”と唸ったという。あの超天才マイルスデイビスを唸らせたバンド。歌心が溢れ出してくる演奏に誰しもがノックアウトされます。
