   4作目のフル・アルバムのレコーディングまでたどり着けたヒップ・ホップ・グループは本当に数少ない。たぶん、このザ・ルーツだけだろう。しかも、彼らはさらに上のレベルに向かおうとしている。歌詞および音楽上のビジョンは大方のヒップ・ホップからかけ離れているが（パフ・ダディやマスター･Pが証明したとおり、メインストリームで富を得るにはビジョンなど必要ない）、そんな部分こそがザ・ルーツの音楽の土台になっている。セカンド・アルバムである1995年の『Do You Want More?!!!??!』と、それに続く1996年の『Illadelph Halflife』は、ヒップ・ホップをその前身にあたるファンク、ジャズと知的にリンクさせた作品。リリックもユニークで、ポスト民族主義的ヒップ・ホップと呼びたくなるような批評性を持っていた。

   本作『Things Fall Apart』（このタイトルはチヌア・アチェベの同名小説から取られた）で、この6人組はこれまでより暗いトーンを打ち出しているが、彼らの音楽の革新性には陰りがない。「黒人に食べさせてもらわなきゃいけなくなったら、俺たちは飢え死にしちまうよ」――映画『モ・ベター・ブルース』からサンプリングされたデンゼル・ワシントンの言葉が、本作の冒頭を飾っている。これは自己憐憫（じこれんびん）ではない。今どき「民族の団結」なんて、と苦笑しているアフリカ系アメリカ人は意外と多いのだ。この事実をザ・ルーツは繰り返し強調している。

   音楽的な面でも、ゲストとの共演を含めてベストと言える仕上がりだ。中でも「Double Trouble」は、ブラック・スターのモス・デフとタリブ・クウェリの功績もあって、オールド・スクール的なテクニックを駆使した楽しいトラックとなった。「You Got Me」では、エリカ・バドゥのアクの少ないヴォーカルを埋め合わせるかのように革新的なパーカッションが登場し、オーガニックなスタイルを取ったジャングル・ビートも顔を出す。ほとんどのラッパーが怒りに身を任せようとしている中、ザ・ルーツは新しいことをやろうとしているのだ。（Martin Johnson, Amazon.co.uk）

ボクはこれがTHE ROOTSの最高傑作だと思います。
アルバム全体を通してシリアスな内容の作品ですが、決して重すぎず、生音のグルーブとBLACK THOUGHTのラップが凄くかっこ良く気持ち良いです。
MOS DEF、COMMON、JAY DEE、D'ANGELO、ERYKAH BADUなどが参加しており、みんなヤバい仕事をしています。
COMMONの「LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE」といい、SLUM VILLAGE「FANTASTIC, VOL.2」といい、この頃のSOULQUARIAN'S周辺の仕事はとても素晴らしいです（勿論、今も素晴らしいですが）。
オススメは【3】、【6】、【9】、【10】、【15】、【16】ですが、やっぱり全部良いです。
どの曲も紹介したいのですが、百聞は一見に如かず。聴いてない人は是非、聴いてみて下さい。

ディアンジェロやジェイディーが音で参加し、コモン、モスデフやエリカバドゥが声で参加している。その全てがルーツと一体となっていて、素晴らしいバランスの良さを見せている。ブラックソートのスキルの高さを再認識でき、ルーツとしての幅広さを理解できる「You Got Me」と、これが基本の「Next Movement」が最高。

このＣＤを買ってからThe Rootsにはまりました。きっかけはこのアルバムの１５曲目に収録されている「You got me」をラジオで聞いて魅了されたことでした。しっとり系でなおかつＲ＆Ｂクイーンの一人、Erykah Baduをフィーチャーしてます。またYou got me以外にもStep Into The RealmからAin't Sayin' Nothin' Newまでの５曲のつなぎ方が気に入ってます。
