最近は映画のプロモーションでの来日やプライベートな話題でメディアに登場する機会が多いジョージ・マイケル。その際に彼の音楽がＢＧＭとして使われることも多いが、映画よりもプライベートよりも彼の音楽とボーカリストとしての才能に注目すべき。たとえばdisc1の４曲目。エルトン・ジョンの曲でエルトン・ジョンを迎えて、圧倒的な歌声を響かせる。ライブエイドでも同じ曲を歌っているが、当時と比較してもはるかに進歩している。disc1の1・12の慈愛に満ちた歌声も素晴らしい。さらにdisc2の1・3に象徴される、時代の音を吸収しながらもクラシカルな趣きのあるダンスミュージックを生み出す非凡な才能も兼ね備える。元クライミーフィッシャーのサイモン・クライミーによるdisc2の12曲目はアレサ・フランクリンとのデュエット。こういったオリジナルアルバム未収録の作品まで網羅されているのもうれしい。コンサートの気配も感じられないし、コマーシャルリリースをしないなどと言っているようだが、これだけの歌声と才能を持っていて歌わずにいられるだろうか？

僕は今までジョージ・マイケルというミュージシャンは知っていましたが、
興味がなく、ほとんど楽曲を聴いたことがありませんでした。
僕がジョージ・マイケルに興味を持ったのは、クイーンのフレディ・マーキュリーの追悼コンサートでの
「Somebody to Love」の熱唱を聴き、ジョージ・マイケルに興味を持ちこのＣＤを手にしました。
１曲目の「ジーザス・トゥ・ア・チャイルド」から、ジョージの歌声に酔わされます。
１枚目のＣＤには、しっとりとした歌が多くジョージの歌声が満喫できます。
２枚目のＣＤには、「ファストラヴ」「モンキー」などアップテンポな曲が並んでいます。
そして最後に僕をジョージと出会わせてくれたフレディ追悼コンサートでの「Somebody to Love（LIVE）」がボーナス・トラックとして収められています。
それにしても、素晴らしい才能とセンスです。
なぜもっと早くに、ジョージに興味を持たなかったのかと自分を責めたくなります。
いろいろと私生活が話題になるジョージ・マイケルですが、そのゴシップネタを見て笑っているそこの人！一度このＣＤを聴いてみなさい！きっと、ジョージのスゴさに驚くでしょう。
ジョージ・マイケルを食わず嫌いな方にこそ、このＣＤをお勧めします。

　ジョージ・マイケルのベスト・アルバム。このアルバムの為の新曲や、エルトン・ジョン、アレサ・フランクリンとのデュエット曲も収録。それにしても、これだけのポップス界に残る名曲を次から次へと生み出していったジョージ・マイケルの才能には改めて驚くばかりである。ワム！としてデビューした頃から、その作曲、歌唱力の才能はトップ・レべルだったが、そこからさらに急激に進化と成長を遂げたのだから、アルバムはとんでもなくハイ・クオリティなものばかりになっていく・・・ジョージ・マイケルは１２０％、「音楽人間」だと思う。このベスト・アルバムを聴けば、それを感じてもらえるはず。ここに収録されている曲以外にも素晴らしい曲はたくさんあるので、オリジナル・アルバムを聴いたことのない人はぜひ聴いてみてほしい。
