小生ぐらいの年齢になると（５９歳）すべての音楽を過去の自分の暮らしぶりと結びつけて懐かしがるので、現在を見つめて生きろと諭されそうですが、このアルバムの中の大ヒット「悲しき天使」は悩める２０代の頃安スナックのカウンターで「おい元気を出せよ」とマスターに励まされながら聴いていたというような思い出と結びついています。当時は歌詞の内容もわからず聴き流していたのですが、今頃になって訳詞を読むと、そのまま若い男女が酒場で語り合った昔を懐かしむ内容となっているのを改めて知った次第です。所で悩むのは青春時代ばかりではなく、いくら年を重ねても生きている限り悩みごとはついて廻るわけで、若い方は「重き荷を負うて長き坂道を登るが如し」という徳川家康の名言が年を経てから!わ!かりますので、ご安心下さいと言いたいこの頃です。又、ポール・マッカトニーの強い後押しがあって彼女のデビューがあったということも今頃知った訳です。

最近、ビートルズのアンソロジーのＤＶＤを購入しました。その中で、グッパイを歌っているメリーの声を聞いて懐かしかった。３２~３３年前、高校生時代良く聞きました。ポールが一緒に映っていました。ポールの作曲です。そしてポールが新人デビューさせました。ポールがメリーにギターをプレゼントしたと本に書いて有りました。声が綺麗で曲も良かったので良く聴いていました。ＣＤショップ等を探したけど見つからなかった。ここで見つけたので早く聞きたいです。３０年位前の方には懐かしいと思いますよ。

全世界で大ヒットのThose Were The Daysを冠した、ベストものとしては決定版といえる作品。アナログ時代、廃盤となってからプレミアがつくほどの人気タイトルだったので、ＣＤ再発はファンには福音といえるものだった。彼女の指向する芸術的本質が全開したEarth Song/Ocean Songでの表現とポップスターの側面を網羅する優れた作品でもあり、初めて彼女の歌を聴いてみたいという向きにはオススメの作品だと思う。

今聴いてみて歌に込めた想いの強さ、表現力において魅力的なのは非ポップサイドで、その多くがシングルＢ面に充てられているのは面白い事実である。豪勢な、時に過剰なアレンジが施された作品に比べると、これらの曲は簡潔で無駄がなくかつ彼女の声を十二分に生かしている。Earth Song/Ocean Songから収録された曲群、瑞々しい情感を湛えたtrack.10、快活にそして可愛らしい唱法が楽しいtrack.11など彼女の主張したかった音を聴くことができる。一方、世界音楽に向いていたＰ．マッカートニーの路線でお仕着せの曲を｢歌わされていた｣のかもしれないポップサイドではあるが、彼女の歌声が届くために必要な大衆性であったのも事実だ。懸命に歌う彼女の健気さと曲自体の素晴らしさも見逃せない。低く高く、かすれた風情を帯びながらも伸びやかで、優しさに満ち溢れたその声はポップス史上屈指の美声だと思う。良し悪しはあるとしてもほとんど全ての曲にその天与の歌声は活きており、それが彼女の最大の武器だったのかもしれない。
