だいたい６０年代のパンク・ガレージ・バンドのアルバムは、名曲、代表曲が、一、二曲入っていて、後はカバーでお茶を濁す、というパターンが多いように思います。

でも、このミュージック・マシーン、オリジナル曲が、なかなかいい。ボニーウェルという男、なかなかのソング・ライターです。１みたいな、いかにもというパンクなナンバーから、ポップなものまで書き分け、ワンパターンにおちいっていません。とくに７や１３なんかは、キャッチーなサウンドなので、テレビＣＭで使われたら、リバイバル・ヒットしそうなんて、思ってしまいます。
アルバム通して、６０年代に浸れるなかなかいいＣＤです。

米ガレージパンクバンド唯一のアルバムです。'60s米ガレージパンクの中で、最も暗く、最もどう猛で、最もファズギター率が高いバンドだと思います。ヒット曲「Talk Talk」を初めて聴いた時はブッ飛びました。'66年でこのサウンドですから、ピストルズもダムドも霞む程のインパクトありました。パンクの元祖といえる一曲を挙げろと言われたら迷わずこれを選びます。ヴォーカル、ショーン・ボニーウェルの野太く野蛮な声ってイギーポップの元祖とも言えそうです。もしかしたらイギーも好きだったんではないかしら。曲は不吉で不気味で恐怖映画みたいなの多いです。「Trouble」の大サビのコーラスなんて何か出てきそうなくらい怖いです。他では「People In Me」「Musculine Intuition」「Wrong」が同系統の恐怖映画挿入曲的ナンバーです。中には数曲、キャラクターに不釣合いとも思えるポップなやつも入ってますが、さすがにレーベル側から「あんたら恐過ぎだからちょっとはポップな曲も入れてくれ」って言われたのかもしれません。ビートルズの「Taxman」もいかつくカヴァーしてますが、間奏のリードギターのインパクトは本家にはかなわないですね。全員黒ずくめ、片手に黒手袋をして演奏している写真を見たことがありますが、視覚的にもダークなイメージ狙ってたんでしょう。ドラマーはこの後、ミレニアムというソフトロック系バンド(超名盤らしいですが聴いた事ないです)に参加しました。これはまた正反対のバンドに入ってしまったんですね。
