1994年にリリースされた『ルーザー』。この1曲がベックをオーヴァーグラウンドに押し上げた。でもその後の彼の活躍を見れば彼は登場すべくして登場したのだ。

『ルーザー』はシルヴァーレイクのコーヒーショップ『ONYX』で1991年には歌われていた。当初はその当時知り合った友人の8トラックで録音されたそうだ。父をブルーグラスのストリート・ミュージシャンに持ち、底辺を彷徨うように生きてきた彼のごった煮の音楽は見事に開花する。で、本作がメジャー・デビューとなるわけだが、計算ずくのローファイさがヘッドフォンで聴くとよく解る。

僕はシングル・カットされた『ルーザー』も持っているのだが、こちらも本作に無い魅力満載で見逃せない傑作だ。

ヒップホップのリズムに、やさぐれたアコースティックギター。
喋ったり歌ったりするその声には、神懸かりなほどにやる気がない。
たぶんアンダーグラウンドのヒップホップにも影響を与えた怪作。
元気もないくせに跳ねるビートが好き、そんな人にオススメ。
