歌詞を読んでいるだけですごい、というポップソングはあんまり無いと思うのですが、このアルバムは歌詞だけで結構すごいです。飛ぶ人は落ちるし、夢が見たいけど見たい夢はないし、まさおは動くので動物です。この圧倒的な歌詞が無機的な声で歌われます。ぜんぜん感情がこもっていないので歌詞の持つ意味が不気味に屹立します。決めた今日から、私は鼻を見る。というようないびつさが、いびつなまますとん、と置きっ放しにされます。

でも、音はいびつとは言い難い、落ち着いた、透明な、澄んだ音です。羅針盤の厚い音よりもシンプルな、ドラムとベースとギターの音です。でも、羅針盤に無い何かがあると思わざるを得ません。エフェクトのかからない、むき出しの、細いギターの音からは脆弱な印象を受けますが、でも落ち着いたステディなリズムと共に、なにか確信めいた強さも感じさせられます。自己憐憫とか社会意識とか、そういうなんか鬱陶しいものを超越したところで鳴っている音のように聴こえます。とても、きれいな音です。

『そら』は二人の持つ毒を全く感じさせない、五月の青く抜けた空の下で芝生に寝転びながら聴きたいまっとうな名曲です。こんな曲がころん、と後ろのほうに落ちていて、他の曲との違和感を全く感じさせません。やっぱり相当な名作だと思います。あらゆるいびつさを包み込んで、あらゆるシニシズムを通り過ぎて、このひとたちは案外ほんとうに、まっとうに、幸福のすみかについて考えているように見えます。

山本精一とPhewによる奇跡的な作品。
天才、山本精一によるシンプルなフォーク・サウンドに
世界的に見てもまれな才能をもった女性ボーカリスト、Phewのこえがのる。

この日々忙しく過ぎていく世の中に
一時の安らぎを与えてくれる音楽。

なにかいいことないかな。
私の幸せって何だろう？

ひとことでいって、ノックアウト。「鼻」もいいけど、「まさおの夢」はいったいなんだ？　考えこんだら寝込む。考えなければ、じんわり涙が滲んでくる。

どの曲も歌詞の不気味さを、二人の声の質がやわらかく包んでいて、どんな苦しさにも出口があるんだということを教えてくれるような気がする。まさに「歌」以外には、文学でも映像でもありえない、かすかな救済。

ぼくには山本精一は他人とは思えない。あの感じで歌えるように練習します。
