トッドのライブ・バンドがなぜ「ユートピア」なのか、これを聴くとよくわかるのです。トッドのソロでは自分で全ての楽器を弾くことが多いのでそれをライブで再現してもどうしてもレコードと違う世界になってしまいます。それならばいっそのこと違うバンドを作ってそれはそれとしてみんなに聴いてもらおうとしたんじゃないでしょうか。このアルバムはベアズビルの倉庫に眠っていた音源を集めたものなんですが、これがまた一品揃い。ビートルズ、ザ・フー、ムーブのカバーがまた良くて、思わずオリジナルを聴きたくなってしまうおいいしいとこ取り。フーのキース・ムーンのまねっこやなんか聴くとこうゆうことをしたいがためのユートピアだったんだなあって。テクニックは適度で何よりも全員が荒くれ者になれるとゆう。未発表曲集ですが駄曲一曲も無し。これは買って良かったとつくづく思います。今聴く頻度がもっとも多いトッドのアルバムとなっています。

ベアズヴィルのテープ倉庫に20年間眠っていたマスターから１９９８年にデジタルリマスターされたモノ。20ビットK2スーパー・コーディングのディスクにより音はクリアー。ライブ音源とデモテープを中心に構成されていて、スタジオ録音のオリジナル曲よりも音質は明らかによい。７８年発売のライブ"Back to the bars"は音がイマイチだったが本作は格段に良い、なのでファンにはこたえられない。７５年前後の旬のトッドに会える。

とにかく、トッドのレア音源にしては、とても音質がいいですね。
トラック20〜23までのシークエンスは、要するに、歌なしのプログラミング。トラック8、9、14、15、18、19は、プロモ。どちらかというと、これらは熱狂的ファン向けの音源。
でも、そのほかは、トラック17を除けば、すべてライヴ音源。とくに、トラック12、13などの名曲のライヴは、どの音源で聴いても感慨深いのです。でも、このコンピレーション収録のライヴ音源は、トッド、ユートピアの音源にしては、とても音質がよいです。ただ、13含めて、若干の曲に、どうしても、オリジナル・マスター・テープに起因する音の乱れはあります。
トッドらのコメントに加え、歌詞、対訳も完備。
