この作品は私たちの生活を彩ってくれるようなものでは決してありません。
昨今の彼らに見られるようなある種の洗練も、まだ先の話です。
歪んで悲鳴を上げるギター、喚き立てる声、つんのめるような硬質なリズム、
誰も歌うことのないような生真面目で陰鬱な歌詞。
メロディラインにはポップさや流麗さが見られるものの、
ここではまるで周囲との断絶を際立たせるための輪郭線のように聴こえます。
しかしこの飲み下せないような尖った異物感こそが、４人だった頃のマニックスの存在証明であり、
真骨頂だと思えてならないのです。

マニックストリートプリーチャーズ３枚目のアルバムにして最高傑作。
バンドがこの作品の続編と位置づける新作「journal for plague lovers」が
あまりに素晴らしかったのもあって、今この作品の輝きもより一層増している
ように感じる。

初めて聴いたとき、前評判からジョイ・ディヴィジョンの「クローサー」のような
曲を想像していた私は、非常に奇妙な感覚を覚えたものだった。
意外とメロディアスなのだが、リズムもギターもどこかいびつで奇怪に感じられた。
メンバーも言うように、サウンド的にはＰＩＬなどのポストパンクにインス
パイアされているのだろうが、決してそれだけではない。

時にはべたべたに感じるほどメロディアスな曲を書くジェームスが、リッチーの
被害妄想と自虐と絶望感に満ちた歌詞に振り回されるという、殆どこのバンドの
構成、つまり歌詞が先に来る作曲方法、そして歌詞と曲を創るメンバーが完全に
別であるという、構成でしかありえないようなことがここでは起きている。
その結果、確かにポストパンクなのだが、完全にマニックスの曲になっている。
素晴らしいとしか言いようがない。

歌詞も含めて言えば、経済的先進国の人間が持っている根源的罪悪感を歌った
「of walking abortion」
ガリガリに痩せて、消えて無くなろうとする少女を歌った「4st 7lb」が凄まじい。
いずれも非常にパーソナルで、ある意味病的でありつつも、批判精神に貫かれた
知的で普遍性を持った歌詞であると思う。
こんな歌詞の曲を歌うバンドを、私は寡聞にして他にしらない。

再販版も出ていることだし、今一度注目されても良いアルバムだと思う。

痛々しく、性急で、かっこいい。
アメリカの真実、ファスターには何度も奮い立たされた。
是非みんなにも聴いてもらいたい。
