古巣パイを離れＲＣＡ移籍後第一弾。７１年１１月に英米同時
リリースされた。マイク・コットン・サウンドを新たに加え、それ
までにはなかった音楽的装飾を散りばめることに成功。
英国流、米国音楽の解釈は暫くの間、キンクスの定番スタイ
ルとなる。

１２曲、全てレイ・デイヴィスの手によるものでオリジナル・

アナログは１~６がＡ面、７~１２がＢ面で今回の再発に伴い
２曲の貴重なテイク、デモも収録され、ますます魅力満ち溢れ
るアルバムとなった。
マイク・コットン・サウンドが真骨頂の２、４、５、８などのキャバ
レー~ダンス・ホール風味は彼らが参加しなければ、なし得なか
った編曲の妙だろう。

また、弟デイヴによるスライド・ギターも随所に効果的に現れ、
アメリ!カナイズされたサウンドを聞かせる。
ハイライトは、やはりタイトル曲である１２でカントリー風味
が塗された代表曲。ライヴでもしばしば演奏されるほどの人気
曲でもある。そしてデイヴィス兄弟が育った住宅街として有名。

本作を骨の髄まで楽しむには”詩”も重要で、これを理解する

としないとでは、その旨みが半減してしまうほどなので、対訳
と同時にお聞きすることをお勧めしたい。

今回のリマスターにより生ギターがより煌びやかになり、ヴォ
ーカルの艶が増した。キンクス最重要アルバムの一枚！

彼らの代表作のひとつでしょう。この味わいは「深い」です。
しかしながら、正直いってこの作品の良さを理解するのにしばらく時間がかかりました。
購入直後は、１の「２０ｔｈ・センチュリーマン」まではストレートなロックで聞きやすかったものの、
あとはホーンサウンドを強調した曲やカントリー調の曲が続き、
「？」という感じの、ものすごく調子のはずれた気分になったことを記憶しています。
それはパイ時代のような彼らを期待していたからであって、この作品とはしばらく距離を置くことになります。
再び聴いたきっかけは、その後、次作「この世はすべてショー・ビジネス」を買って、
トラック５「アルコール」のライブバージョンを聴いてからです。
ここで自分は悟りました。（笑）
長い時間を掛けてキンクスを理解してやろうという方、お薦めです。
本作「マスウェル・ヒルビリーズ」に潜む、悲惨な人々の姿を描きながらも、なぜか温かみのある歪んだ音の世界を堪能して下さい。

ブルース、カントリーなどアメリカ南部音楽テイストと、ブリティッシュ・ロック感覚が絶妙に絡み合った大傑作。
「ブリティッシュ・スワンプ」とこういうのを表現するらしいです。
で。
ある本によると、例えばローリング・ストーンズなんかは別格として、ザ・フーやキンクスといったバンドは、日本ではどうにもマイナーな存在だそうです。
特にザ・フーなんかは、欧米と日本で、最も評価・知名度の温度差が大きいとか。
でも最近では、雑誌でもザ・フーの名前を目にする機会も増えた（ような気がする）し、その状況も改善されているんじゃないかな、と（多分）。
ところが。
どうもキンクスに関しては、なんか欧米でも一般的な認知度は今イチなんだとか。
「ユー・リアリー・ガット・ミー」という代表曲にしてヒット曲もあるんですけど。
ミュージシャンズ・ミュージシャン、でしょうか。
レイ・デイヴィスのソングライターとしての能力は、ポール・マッカートニーやブライアン・ウィルソンとかにも引けを取らない――筈。
キンクスを敬愛するミュージシャンや、評論家など、いわば玄人筋は少なくありません。
Ｍ1なんかを聴いて心躍らないロック・ファンは居ない、んじゃないかなあ、と思うんですが…。
はい。
そんなキンクスの代表作であり、ロック史に残る名盤です。是非。
