生きてて良かった・・・。
先ごろライノからコンプリート・フィルモア限定盤がオフィシャルリリースされたばかりの名盤。ついにヴェールを脱いだコンプリート盤を聴いて驚かされるのは、このオリジナル盤の完璧な編集技。3日間のうち、最終日を中心にベストテイクを厳選しており、メンフィス・ソウル・シチューでのカーティスのソロ・オーヴァーダブ処理も、演奏曲順入替えも、My sweet lord 、Knock on wood の収録時間によるカットも、「商品化」の名の元に全て許される。
3日間の内、一度しか演奏されないでこのオリジナル盤に収録されているのは、I stand accused 、Mr.Bojangles 、Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours の3曲。これをプロデューサー、アリフ・マーディンとカーティス本人の英断と言わずになんと言おうか！
歴史にもしの文字はないが、「この名盤がもし未編集で世に出ていたら」ということをよーく考えてみよう。どんなライブ作品でも完全盤、未編集がつねに良いとは限らない。このド迫力顔面アップのジャケで、一枚ものに熱気を真空パックすることにより、ライブ当日の圧倒的テンションをここまで伝説的に後世に伝えることが出来たのだ。この壮絶テンションでブロウしまくり前座して、さらにトリのアレサまできっちりバッキングしたカーティス楽団の体力って一体・・・。

逆説的だが完全盤が世に出たことにより、さらにこのオリジナル盤の価値が高まった。
ついでだが、この名盤のドラムスのパーディーに後年、「このライブ演奏のあんたが、私の一番のフェイバリットだ」と直接伝えると、奴はウィンクして喜んだものだ。
あとは、この日のアレサとのフィルモア映像完全版のDVD化を残すのみ。
任せたぞ、ライノよ！

アレサ・フランクリンのフィルモア・ウェストでのライブでのバックをつとめたキング・カーティス。アレサが登場する前の演奏のライブですが、これだけすごい演奏されると並の歌手ではステージに出られなくなってしまうことでしょう。冒頭の "Memphis Soul Stew" で紹介されるメンバーがまたすごい！　バーナード・パーディー、ルーファス・トーマス、パンチョ・モラレス、ビリー・プレストン…。とにかく大盛り上がり。これぞソウルのごった煮です。

まさにソウルパワー！！しかも勢いだけではなく、かなりの技量をもった圧倒的名な演奏です。マスタリングも当時の録音から察するにかなり丁寧、ボートラもいいです！相変わらず拘ったRHINOのスタンスを垣間見れます。
ところで、B.PERDIE大先生の若き日の元気な超グルーヴドラムがそのサウンドと相俟って強烈、ベースも含めたリズム隊のウネリは相当なノリとなって迫ります！PERDIEフリークは必携！
それに加え、押し引きをわきまえた、実は繊細なテクニックにも惚れ惚れするKING先生、これを聴くまで認識はなかったのですが、ワウまで噛ませたかなりエレクトロニックな大胆なフレージングも炸裂、しっかりした演奏でありながらノリノリのまさにグルーヴで一気にファンク、R&Bを聴かせてくれます。
当時の常套句とはいえ、単にノリノリだけではなく、スローな曲で聴かせどころも準備するなど、サービス精神も極めて旺盛！
徹頭徹尾ひたすら揺れっぱなし、ということでは物足りない方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、それが渋いんです！
こんな曲聴かせてくれる人、今となってはそうはいませんね。
PURDIEフリークは当然のこと、あの頃の熱いミュージックマンたちの思いは痛感すること請け合い、ブラックミュージックを辿るうえでは看過できませんよ！
