"HIGHLAND AIRE"を少し聴いただけで、まるでPMGのアルバムを聴いているかのような錯覚に陥ります。どれだけPMGのサウンドにライルメイズが貢献しているかということなのですが、それにしてもPMGのファンならばこれはマストアイテムでしょう。ただ、単にライルがリーダーだというだけでなく、ビルフリーゼルってパットメセニーにかなり近いところにいるギターリストだと思いますね。また、ナナヴァスコンセロスも参加しているので尚更あの頃のPMGに近いサウンドになっている。しかし単にPMG的なだけではなく、アレックスアクーニャが入っているのでポールワーティコとは少し違ってもっとパーカッシブな音になっているのが面白いしこのアルバムをPMGとは少し角度を変えたユニークな感じにしてますね。アレックスは灰汁が強いので。そういえば、"TEIKO"のベースラインが、ウェザーの"BLACK MARKET"のそれに酷似していて面白いですね。ただ、TEIKOってもしや日本人女性の名前？　なんでアメリカ人が日本のイメージでやると中華街的のりになるんでしょうかね。サウンドは良いのですが、そういう妙なところで僕はひっかかりました。５~７の"アラスカ組曲"。それこそアラスカ的な視覚的なイメージが湧いて楽しめます。マークジョンソンも出だし、いい感じでソロをとってるし、ビルフリーゼルもどことなくパットを思わせるアプローチ。マークジョンソンのアルバムで、パットとビルが競演してましたが、マークはこのアルバムに参加した頃からあのアイディアを思いついたのでは？　最後の"CLOSE TO HOME"は、ライルのピアノとシンセがひたすら美しく、こういうアプローチに僕は弱いです。まだ聴いてない方は、ぜひひとつ。素晴らしい作品だと思いますよ。

1985年ニューヨーク、パワーステーションで録音。満を持して発表したメイズのソロ第一作。
このアルバムを聴くと、僕らがパット・メセニー的と思っているものの多くは実はライル・メイズ的であるということを気づかせてくれる。清涼感あふれる音楽を構築するこのキーボーダーがいかに素晴らしいかを実感できる。1の『Highland Aire』からして彼の音楽はまるで精緻に創られた構築物だ。ナナのパーカッションが実によく効いている。特にECM時代のパットの音を求めているリスナーにはとても響く。
ふと思ったのはジャコがザヴイヌルのような陳腐なポリフォニック・シンセの音でなく、メイズのようなよりアコースティックで強く繊細なキーボードのもとでプレイをしたら素晴らしかったのではないかな、ということだ。彼の音は有機体だ。総天然型天才ミュージシャンと数多く他流試合をもっとして欲しいなぁと思う。

パット・メセニーが自分のプロダクション会社を設立し、ＥＣＭからゲフィンに移籍したのに伴って、グループのキーボード奏者であるライル・メイズもゲフィンの所属となり、同レーベルから初のソロ・アルバムとなった本作を発表したのが１９８６年のことである。西ドイツのマイナー・レーベルだったＥＣＭではできないことを．．．という意気込みがメセニーにはあったのとは対照的に、メイズは至ってマイ・ペースで自己の音楽世界を鮮やかに提示して見せた。

全体を支配するトーンは極めて北欧的というか、アメリカ的なカラッとした爽やかさとは違うものだ。当時ベース・ディザイアーズを率いていたマーク・ジョンソンがビル・フリーゼルと共に参加しており、ＥＣＭ的雰囲気に満ちている。しかもリミックスをＥＣＭの看板エンジニアであるヤン・エリク・コンシャウが担当している。これはエバーハルト・ウェーバーをフェイバリットに挙げるようなメイズの音楽的志向がはっきり示されたものだといえる。

プロデュースはメイズ自身とスティーヴン・カンターが担当しているが、これをもしマンフレート・アイヒャーがプロデュースしていたら、と考えるとワクワクしてしまう。非常に澄み切ったサウンドが展開されており、一般的なジャズ・フュージョンの枠には収まらない。

特に組曲のM-5は圧巻。ビル・フリーゼルのスライド・ギターが何とも美しく、雄大な世界が目の前に開けてくる。ラストM-6の全編に満ちた優しさも絶品。

ライル・メイズの溢れる才能が遺憾なく発揮された傑作。２００５年現在、本作を含めて４作しかソロ・アルバムが発表されていないのが何とも残念。
