1941年から1944年にかけて、ストコフスキーはトスカニーニとともにＮＢＣ交響楽団の指揮者をつとめた。このＣＤにおさめられた録音はそのおりのものである。ＮＢＣ交響楽団といえば世界各国から名手を集め、厳格なトスカニーニの鉄の鞭で鍛えられたオーケストラである。華麗で自由な解釈をするストコフスキーが十八番のチャイコフスキーの交響曲４番を振る。相性やいかに？と誰しもが疑問に思うことだろう。

いやはや全く、これがとんでもないことになったのである。凄いとしかいいようが無い。速めのテンポをとりながら、ここでもストコフスキーはいつものように彼一流のデフォルメをかけるのだが、名人集団ＮＢＣ交響楽団はそれに非常に敏感に反応する。一方で、音のアタックはトスカニーニの時と変わらち?鋭く強烈、ひとたびテンポを加速させれば、火を噴くよう。ただならぬ緊張をはらんだ演奏で、まさに空前絶後、凄まじくドラマティックなチャイコフスキーとなったのである。かなりトンデモな楽曲のカットもあり、音も年代相応で、お薦めしづらいのだが、演奏そのものだけを評価するなら５ッ星＋αをつけたいところである。
