ノルウェーの耽美ゴシックメタルバンドの1st。フィメールヴォーカル、Liv Kristine Espenaesの透明感のある妖精のようなソプラノヴォイスを中心にして、ヘヴィなギター、男性ディストーション・ヴォイス、美しいKeyによるアレンジなど、美醜が極端に際だっているアルバム。ということで楽曲の展開がAMORPHIS的だが、女性voがメインということで、それほどダブっては聞こえない。ピアノとギターによる印象的なイントaロから始まる#1は、その後Liv嬢のソフトなソプラノヴォイスとKeyで幻想的な雰囲気を作りつつ、ディープなディストーションヴォイスが展開する美醜が際だっている曲で、このバンドの典型的な楽曲。#3はLiv嬢の透き通るようなコーラスから一転ノイジーなメタリックな展開に移行し、ディストーションヴォイスが被さり、またLiv嬢が美しく歌う、という感じの静と動の対比を意図的に作り出している!楽曲。#4は非常に悲壮感の漂うメロディを歌うLiv嬢の歌唱を聴くことが出来、チェロなどを使い、さらに楽曲に悲しい色づけをしている。#5はトラッド的メロディのある、ピアノ、チェロなどのアコースティックな楽器だけを使った曲で、Liv嬢のアトモスフェリックで、可愛らしい歌声にジーンとくる。総じて、Liv嬢の美しく魅力的な歌声の素晴らしさに尽きるのだが、このバンドをメタルサイドの人間だけのお気に入りにしておくのは非常に勿体ないと思った。

ノルウェー出身の7人組男女混声型ゴシックメタルバンド「THEATRE OF TRAGEDY」によるファーストです。1998年の作品。

相変わらず狭いマーケットとはいえ、一定の地位を確立したゴシックメタルですが、当時としてはやはり「異端の存在」。ハードなギターリフと淡々とした鍵盤楽器がドゥーミィーに流れる中、男性デス声と対照的な可憐な女性ボーカルとが交差するという典型的なゴシックメタルのスタイルがすでに完成されています。何ごともスタイルを確立したという意味で、彼らが傑出した存在であることは間違いありません。

邪悪な世界の代弁者たるRaymond I Rohonyiのデス声と、はかなくも可憐なLiv Kristine Espenes嬢によるクリスタル＆エンジェリックヴォイスが作り出す美の世界との鮮やかな対比が何といってもこのアルバムの聴きどころ。鍵盤楽器や弦楽器が効果的に割り込んできて、嫌が応でも聴く者の琴線を触れまくります。見事な構成美の背景には、北欧ノルウェー出身という血の存在を確実に感じさせます。

この作品を聴いて明るい気分になれるかというと、もちろん答えは「否」です。たとえようもない陰鬱で耽美な世界にひたすら身を任せるうちに、不思議なトリップ感にも似たトランス状態に浸れます。「旧守派ゴシックメタルファン」にとってはまさにバイブル的な作品です。
