この作品について自伝の中でキースはこう言っている。

『スピリッツ』は、あるところで溺れかけた事から生まれたんだ。そこでぼくは別のところに浮かびあがることができたというわけだ。溺れる事を忘れることなく、溺死することもなく。

1985年の初め、キースはクラッシックの世界にすっかり失望していて、すっかり鬱になってしまっていた。そこで彼が手に取ったのは民族音楽の楽器だった。このアルバムはそういったキースが自らに癒しが必要であった時の様子を残したアルバムだ。

できるだけヨーロッパのクラッシック音楽と距離を置こうとする音楽。

歯医者の予約の間もその中の一曲をずつと口ずさんでいたという話だ。キースの一面が出た希有なアルバムだ。

キースがフルート、タブラ、ギター、パーカッション等様々な楽器で多重録音。独自の世界を切り開いた1枚め、また2枚めのアフリカ的なパーカッションの聴かれる曲に特に魅了されます。1枚め最初、キースのアルバムと聞かされていなければ、日本の夏祭りの祭礼音楽だと錯覚するでしょう。3曲め、ゆっくりしたテンポの笙と和太鼓のような音が聴こえ、日本の悠久、泰平を表現しているよう。5曲目は、歓喜にあふれた曲。6曲目はボーカルを伴うブルースギター。インド音楽の影響もあるのでしょう。9曲め、リコーダーの後ろで、パーカッションと共に中国風の楽器が織り成すリズムが面白い。12曲め、和太鼓（のような楽器）とフルートが織り成すリズムに、最後パーカッションに割り入り転回。2枚め5曲めではボーカルの多重録音による寂寥感のある和声が聴かれます。8曲めは突き抜けるようなasが印象的。10曲めは静的なフルートソロ。「ミステリーズ」等での民族的な世界を押し進めたような世界とさらに当時のキース独自の世界が混淆しているような、音楽が楽しめます。ファンなら必ず聴くべきでしょう
