ケイト・ブッシュの3作目。このレコーディングの最中にピーター・ガブリエルのレコーディングに参加したことで、彼女の隠された才能が一気に開花され、自由奔放に彼女独特の世界が展開されている。

1曲目「バブーシュカ」は夫に偽名を使ってラブレターを送る女性の話。詩の内容にマッチした、男の心をもてあそぶような曲調が心地よい。2曲目の「ディーリアス」では単調なリズムをバックに彼女の美しい声が聞け、宙をさ迷うような感覚が得られる。その後、テンポのいい曲や異国情緒のある曲が奏でられるが、その天国のようなひとときは攻撃的なバイオリン・サウンドで始まる「バイオリン」で打ち破られる。
が、その次の「少年の口づけ」はピアノのバックに語りで掛けるように歌われ、昂ぶった心が癒される。

「夢見る兵士」は戦争で犠牲となった兵士たちへの鎮魂歌で、サビの部分では男性コーラスと彼女の声のかけあいがしんみりとした気分にさせる。ラストの「呼吸」はゆったりとした深みのある曲で、母親の胎内にいる子供が核戦争について訴えかけ、効果音をはさんで曲は激しく盛り上がり終結する。

幻想的なジャケットも内容にマッチしており、彼女の最高傑作とも言える。

過去に愛聴盤だったものを、しかも２０数年ぶりに聴くという行為には不安が少なからず伴ないます。まして、それがかつて名作だと信じていたものであった場合尚更です。･･･　消沈してしまう最大の原因は、録音が悪い。続いて、音作りが古い。でしょうか？　ケイト・ブッシュの場合、常に（当時の）最先端音源を多用していたアーティストです。ある種の覚悟を持って聴いてみました。･･･

それは杞憂でした。　現在の高録音盤のものに比べれば、流石に音そのものは少々混濁しており絶対的な透明感には欠けるているようには感じられます。左右への音の広がりがもう少し欲しいという欲も出てしまいます。ですが、音使いはいまだに鮮烈そのもの、変幻自在の多様なアレンジに今更ながら飽きれ返るほどです。更には音場の奥行き感のその深さ。ブリテッシュ系の小型スピーカーを使用したなら、その世界観は限りなく深くなることでしょう。･･･　安心して聴いて下さい。･･･　当時、あなたが聴いていたケイト・ブッシュの『魔物語』の世界が間違いなくあなたの眼前に蘇ってくることを保障できます。

1980年9月発売のケイト・ブッシュの第4作。
ケイト・ブッシュのボーカルの質は希有なものだ。1/fとかいうもの以上にどこにもない質感を持った楽器そのものだ。それに気がついていたのが同じく、1/fなど超越しているボーカリスト、ピーター・ガブリエルだ。『Don't Give Up』でのデュエットなど希有なボーカリスト2人のロカールの交換原則(リンカーン・ライムの本を参照されたい・・・)そのものの見事な結晶体的傑作である。このアルバム作成中にピーター・ガブリエルのアルバムに参加した事がこのアルバムの完成度をより高いものにしたと思う。

でもケイト・ブッシュって顔も悪くないと思うのは僕だけかな。
