   1980年のジョン・レノン殺害に衝撃を受けたポールは、この事件についてほぼ口を閉ざしてしまう。そんな状態は1982年の本作『Tug of War』まで続いた。本作に収録された「Here Toda」で、ポールはやっと昔の仲間への愛情を吐露したのである。「僕がまだ生きてることを彼は笑い飛ばすだろうな」――ポールはそうもらす。

   プロデューサーにジョージ・マーティンを起用したことで、本作はポールのアルバム中もっとも堂々とビートルズっぽさを打ち出した作風に仕上がった。伝説のロカビリー・アーティスト、カール・パーキンスがちらりと顔を見せるほか、2曲でスティービー・ワンダーが登場。ファンキーな「What's That You're Doing」と、超の付くシンプルさが見事な効果を上げるヒット・シングル「Ebony and Ivory」がその2曲だ。（Daniel Durchholz, Amazon.com）

Jolted by John Lennon's murder in 1980, McCartney mostly kept mum on the subject until 1982's Tug of War, which contained "Here Today," a belated admission of love for his old chum, who McCartney says would have probably laughed it off were he still alive. George Martin's production makes this McCartney's most unabashedly Beatlesque effort. Rockabilly legend Carl Perkins stops by for a cameo, while Stevie Wonder appears on two songs, the funky "What's That You're Doing" and the simplistic (but massively successful) hit single "Ebony and Ivory." --Daniel Durchholz

僕が最初にリアルタイムで買って聴いたビートルズのメンバーのソロアルバム。それだけに思い入れがないといえば嘘になるが、それを差し引いても、ここには「ただのいい曲」がたくさん入って入る。普通の人の感覚で平和を詠んだタイトル曲。ソウルマニアの友達がエンディングを絶賛したTake It Away（もちろん曲もいい）。ほの暗いメロディに切実な歌詞、しかしポールらしい前向きさを失わないSomebody Who Cares。ひたすら楽しいBallroom Dancing、そして個人的にはポールのソロ時代のベストバラードに挙げたいWanderlust。これだけあっては、S・ワンダーとのデュエットで話題を読んだEbony And Ivoryが普通の曲に聞こえてしまう。いい曲を聴いて歌うことの楽しさがこれほど味わえるアルバムは、ポールでも珍しい。願わくば、CD化を機に、Ebony~のポールが１人で歌うヴァージョンと、屈指のB面の名曲Raincloudsを入れてほしかった。

全曲中１曲として駄作なし！ともすればスティービー・ワンダーとのコラボレーション「エボニー・アンド・アイボリー」が話題の中心になりがちだが、そんな事はなくこの２曲が入っていなくとも歴然としたポールの最高傑作だ。タイトル曲「タッグ・オブ・ウォー」から「テイク・イット・アウエィ」に続くメドレーは完璧だし、「ワンダーラスト」や「ボールルーム・ダンシング」などシングルになっても何の不思議もない佳曲が並ぶ。先のスティービー・ワンダーの参加が目玉になってはいるが、旧友リンゴ・スター（ドラムス）や師匠ジョージ・マーティン（プロデュース）の参加も忘れてはならない。このメンツにより、正にビートルズ・サウンドが再現されていると言っても過言ではないのだ。もっと言えば、ポールの他の作品やジョン、ジョージ、リンゴの全作品と比べても、これほどビートルズを彷彿させるアルバムは他にないと言い切れるのではないか？７３年発表の『バンド・オン・ザ・ラン』もこのアルバムに勝るとも劣る事はない。が、『バンド・オン・ザ・ラン』はウイングスというグループの作品でありポスト・ビートルズを目指していたのに対し、この作品はネオ・ビートルズ・サウンドそのもなのだ。８０年代にＦＡＢ４が存在したとすれば、きっとこのような「音」も聴かせてくれたに違いないと思う。だからこそ「ヒァ・トゥディ」といったジョン・レノンへのトリビュート・ナンバーもストレートに心に響くのだろう。※９３年のリマスター盤にボーナストラックを入れていないのも自信の表れであろう

８２年作。ウィングスを活動停止にして「マッカートニー２」にて軽く一仕事してから、老師ジョージ・マーティンをプロデューサーとして迎えて製作されたこれだけでも豪華なアルバム。当初はウィングス名義で製作されていたものの、ジョンの射殺という大きなハプニングが起こり、ライヴ活動の停止からウィングスは解散、ソロ名義での発表となった。よって初期のレコーディングの作品にはデニー・レインのギターも聴かれる。ジョージ・マーティンの参加は恐ろしいほどの効果を上げており、ストリングスやブラスなどが生き生きと響いていて感動的だ。特に２．のブラスはウィングスらしいフレーズながら聞こえ方が全く異なる。１．のストリングスも言うまでも無いほど素晴しい。ティーヴィー・ワンダーの参加した４．はそのままブラコンで、今まででは考えられない佳曲。５．はジョンに捧げられた曲。ポールのお気に入りの８．は壮大で美しいバラード。９．にはポールのアイドルの一人だったカール・パーキンズが参加。１２．は全米１位になったスティーヴィーとの共作で、鍵盤の黒鍵と白鍵を人類に例えて世界の調和を歌った名曲である。ちなみにこのアルバムは当初は二枚組で計画されており、次作のマイケル・ジャクソンの共作などを含む「Pipes Of Peaces」はこの時のセッションをそのまま収録したものである。確かに二枚組で出したら豪華すぎですよね。ちなみに本作の収録曲のいくつかはサントラ盤「ヤァ！ブロード・ストリート」にて再演されているので、そちらも注目です。
