Deep Purple were on the eve of breaking wide open when the quintet made Machine Head, a record that launched a heap of hard-rock hits, not to mention the bulk of the live album Made in Japan. No fewer than three classics were unveiled here: "Highway Star," "Space Truckin'," and their biggest hit ever, "Smoke on the Water." Ritchie Blackmore's crunchy guitar was becoming the group's trademark, and the throb that opens "Smoke on the Water" went miles in concretizing his place in the pantheon of 1970s guitar deities. 　70年代にアナログレコードでロックを聴きまくった世代には、ＣＤはどこか馴染めない。アナログ版がＣＤ化されたものは音が「くぐもり」がちだし、「Ｂ面一曲目」の感慨がないし、等々。だが、デジタル化もそう悪くはない、と思わせてくれるのが、このアルバムである（これは 25th Aniversary シリーズに共通）。

　Disk1はオリジナルのリマスター版。音はかなり良くなっていると思う。三曲のオマケ付。個人的に気に入ったのはDisk2である。Roger Groverによるリミックスバージョンでアルバム丸ごとである。音源は同じだと思うが、イントロやエンディングに違いがあったり、なにより各パートの音がすばらしい。特にドラムはかなり音色が変わっている。パートの個性が際だつと共に、それが上手く調和している。

　ところで、このアルバムは名曲揃いだが、Live in Japanが出た後は、「ライブのパフォーマンスにくらべるとかなり劣って聞く気がしない」、と音楽評論家に酷評されたりもした。確かいにわたしもLive in Japanを先に聞いてしまってからMachine Headを聞いたので、かなり拍子抜けしたのをおぼえている。

　そんなことを思い出しながら、このDisk2を聞いてみると、ひょっとして当時のメンバーはこのリミックスバージョンのような音にしたかったのでは、などど勘ぐってしまう（当時のパープルは契約上レコード会社に随分しばられていたみたいだし）。真偽のほどはわからないが、若々しいパープルのバンドとしての息づかいが聞こえてくるとともに、Roger Groverのプロデューサーとしての力量を堪能できるアルバムである。

70年代ＨＲシーンに金字塔を打ち立てた「Machine Head」のリマスター＆リミックス盤です。第２期ＤＰというと「In Rock」も代表作としてあげられますが、ハードコアなＨＲの「In Rock」よりもジョン・ロードに代わってリッチー・ブラックモアのイニシアティヴがさらに増して、クラシカル＆メロウ色が強まったこのアルバムのほうが、日本では人気が高いようです。

ＣＤ2枚のうち、Disc１はオリジナル音源のリマスター盤、Disc２はロジャー・グローヴァーが手がけたリミックス盤という全体構成。Disc１は１〜７がオリジナルで８曲目は「When A Blind Man Cries」という「Never Before」がシングルカットされたときのＢ面に収録された曲で、ＣＤとしては初めて日の目を見ることができました。うーん、確かにＢ面という感じの地味な曲です。９曲目の「Maybe I'm A Leo」と10曲目の「Lazy」は別テイクで、リッチーのソロもオリジナルバージョンと異なります。また、音質はさすがリマスター効果は絶大で、とくにドラムとベースの音が粒立って聞こえてきます。Disc２はロジャー・グローヴァーによるリミックス録音です。とりたてて特筆するべき点はありませんが、別テイクのプレイが聴けたりとやはり編集盤ならではの楽しみ方ができるはずです。

注意したいのは、こうした編集盤はあくまでもオリジナル音源を聴き倒したファン向けのアルバムであるという点です。ＤＰビギナーにとっては、いったい何が違って何が面白いのかはまるで分からないと思います。それこそ「口コピー」で全曲のソロパートをそらんじることができるマニアでないと、楽しみも半減してしまうでしょう。

CD1で私が何１０００回と聞きまくったマシンヘッドがロジャー グローバーのリミックスにより素晴らしく蘇った。オリジナルの演奏マスターテープからのリミックスなので公式盤（CD2でリマスターされ収録）では最終的にカットされたギターやキーボードの効果音パートや別テイクのギターソロが随所で聞け大変興味深い。シングルのみで発表のWhen a blind man criesや、日本初公開の４チャンネルレコードミックスのMaybe lm a leo/Lazyが収録されているのもマニアには嬉しい。ただし、この記念盤は私のようにギターとキーボードのパートを完全に鼻唄で歌える人向けのアルバムで、素人衆には収録内容がほとんど同じのCD1とCD2のこまかな差が理解出来ないでしょう。
結論 パープルの鉄人向け。素人衆は通常のシングルアルバムで勉強してこの２枚組にチャレンジして下さい。
追伸 CD2は従来盤のただのリマスターです。私的には星★★★★★★で
すが鉄人向け過ぎるということで泣く泣く★★★★という低めの評価にしました。
