Sunny Day Real Estate broke up in 1995 when bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith left to join the Foo Fighters or when frontman Jeremy Enigk converted to Christianity, depending on whom you ask. The band got back together in the summer of 1997 (minus Mendel, replaced by former Mommyheads bassist Jeff Palmer) to jam, and a full album blossomed. The result, How It Feels to Be Something On, is nothing short of stunning. Poking their heads into the gaping jaws of yearning, Enigk and company unravel tight, atypical rock songs to reveal a shimmering spool of uncertain longing. Almost sounding like an unlikely hybrid of the Smiths and Yes, How It Feels... is the grandest slab of musical sympathy since Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream, equal parts intensity and sadness for the sing-along set. バンド再結成後に発表された3rdアルバムです。これはあくまでも私見ですが、4枚のスタジオアルバムのなかで最高傑作だと思っています。恐らく全作品中、最も暗く、陰鬱。どこか異国風でエキセントリックなギターリフも実に美しく、他を寄せ付けない強力な個性を感じます。

確かに、これ以前の2作品も、楽曲自体のクオリティーには目を見張るものがありましたが、どこかインディーバンド然とした部分が残っており（それが良いのかもしれませんが）、そういう意味では、解散前の1stと2nd、再結成後の3rdと4th、と分けて考えることも出来るかと思います。しかし、次作4th「Rising Tide」の大仰過ぎる世界観にたじろぎ、今一つ“歌”のほうも響いてこなかった私としましては、やはり、この3rdアルバムこそが彼らの到達点であったのでは？と感じるのです。

当然、捨て曲なし。
自信を持ってお勧めします。
最終曲「The Days Were Golden」の低音コーラス、
この得体の知れない説得力はちょっと特筆しておきたいですね。

　SDREと言えば一般的にエモとして取り扱われることが多い。それは別に
結構なことだと思うし、彼等がその手のシーンに変革者として大きく貢献した
ことは疑いようが無い。しかし、2005年の感覚で本作が放つサウンドをエモ
と断言してしまうと、いささか誤解が生じるかもしれない。実際に聴いて頂け
れば分かると思うが、哀愁溢れるメロディーを美声で歌い上げる感じのバンド
とは、もう、だいぶ毛色が違うのだ。
　例えば、リズムアンサンブルの躍動感や高揚感（重要）。揺らめくギターの
陶酔感・快楽性。ドラマティックな動き方をするベースライン。ずぶずぶと深み
に嵌っていってしまいそうな沈鬱的な唄。ダイナミズムに溢れた曲展開と思慮
深いアレンジ。そしてそれらを纏め上げる構成力。
　むしろこういった部分がSDREの根幹をなしている（特に後期は顕著に）。やれ
プログレだなんだと言うつもりもないが、「アンサンブルの妙」に並々ならぬ「気
づかい」をかけているバンドであることは分かって頂きたい。そしてその「妙」が
より剥き出しな、肉感的に体感できるのが本作である。本作は他のアルバムに
比べ、ギターをばーんとストロークする場面も少なく、表面的には最も静的なアル
バムとなったが、かえって一音一音の吸引力、リズムがもたらす振動は増したの
ではないかと思う。

あらかじめ断っておきますが超名盤です。いわゆるEMOの代表格ですが、この作品は本当にもう大傑作です。書評タイトルのまんまです。独特のドロドロとした（って言えばいいのか？なんて表現していいかわからん！）リズムと高らかになるギター。そして歌、がどこにも留まることのできない心を埋めている。。。っていうか何書いていいかわからん。とにかくこの作品は（これ系のバンドはそう呼ばれたくないらしいが、）リアルエモーショナルコアで、感情の全てで、ロックで、自分の永遠の名盤なのれす。。。ナンバガとリズム、国籍は違えど、繋がっている。あと、この作品はブックレットのシュールなアートワークが内容にはまっててすげー好き。
