ウォーン・マーシュの名がクローズ・アップされたのはスーパーサックス・プレイズ・バードによってであろう。ウエスト・コースト・スクールのクールでおとなしいテナー奏者がチャーリー・パーカーの目くるめくアドリブをユニゾンで吹くという奇抜な企画の中心にいたことは、驚きを隠せない事実でもあった。もともとスタジオ・ミュージシャンとしての実力を兼ね備えていたのだから驚くにあたらないのかもしれないが、パーカーの対極に位置する彼の経歴からして脅威のテクニックと激しいフィンガー・ワークは強烈であった。そもそもコニッツらと共演していたマーシュはこれぞ木管楽器といえるクールな中にもウォームで繊細な息遣いが感じられるプレイで好感の持てるサックス奏者であった。リラックス演奏ながらも、ときおり見せる小節を超えたロングドライブなフレーズは、テナーのコニッツといえそうな見事な楽想を持っていたのだ。これほど個性的で有能なテナーはもっと見直されるべき存在ではないだろうか。
