   モ・ワックス・レーベルのボス、ジェームズ・ラヴェルと個性派ヒップ・ホップ・アーティスト、DJシャドウのアイデアが結晶した画期的なアルバム、それが『Psyence Fiction』だ。本作ほどの視野と野心を持ったプロジェクトは過去にもあまり例がなく、構想期間が3年以上に及んだことでヒップ・ホップ界の伝説になってしまったが、国際的なミュージシャンたちの参加により、ついに完成を見ることになった。レディオヘッドのトム・ヨーク、ザ・ヴァーヴのリチャード・アシュクロフト、ビースティ・ボーイズのマイク・Dという顔ぶれがそろい、ヴォーカルを引き受けたのである。

   何やら派手派手しい宣伝文句に食われ気味の『Psyence Fiction』だが、サウンドを聴けばやはり大ヒット間違いなしのアルバムという感じがする。「Rabbit In Your Headlights」では、シャドウがオーケストラ・サウンドを絶妙にミキシングすることで、ヨークの悲しげな歌声に壮大な背景を与えている。シャドウはインスト曲の腕前も確かで、「Unreal」や「Celestial Annihilation」は豪華ヴォーカリスト陣の顔色をなからしめるほどの出来ばえだ。

   コラボレーションがやや不調に終わったトラックも確かにある。アシュクロフトによる「Lonely Soul」と、マイク・Dのラップにはいつもの精彩が見られない「The Knock」は本作の汚点となってしまった。この2曲を除けば申し分のないアルバムと言えるだろう。（Louis Pattison, Amazon.co.uk）

UNKLEはMO'WAX総帥ジェームス・ラヴェルとDJ SHADOWによるプロジェクトで、このアルバムは彼らの人脈をフルに活かし、豪華ゲスト陣を多数迎えた素晴らしいアルバムになっています。ゲストはビースティー・ボーイズからマイクＤ、VERVEのリチャード・アシュクロフト、まだデビュー前のBADLY DRAWN BOY、そして極め付けがradioheadのトム・ヨーク。DJ SHADOWと共作したrabbit in your headlightsはradioheadのライブで聴けないのがひたすら残念でたまらない名曲です。おじさんが車に轢かれまくるプロモもなんだか奇怪で面白かったですね。気づいてない方も多いと思いますが、国内盤には0曲目が収録されていて、1曲目のプレイ直後に巻き戻しをすることによって聴くことが出来ます。クレジットがないのでわかりませんが、おそらくDJ SHADOWによるDJMIXだと思います。これ目当てに国内盤を探すというほどのものではありませんが、既に持っている方はお試しください。

Mo'waxのジェームス・ラヴェルがDJシャドウとタッグを組み制作した作品。
これまで立て続けにヒットを生み出したシャドウの勢いがそのまま伝わる出来です。
どこまでも緻密で、なおかつ体温・泥臭さを感じるドラム。美しい上モノ。
今作ではシンガーを多用することで、そういったシャドウの持ち味が
ポップソングとして昇華される過程を楽しめます。
「HIGH NOON」を更にどファンキーにしたような7、トム・ヨークが
ボーカルを担当した感傷の極みとも言うべき11（これは是非PVも見るべき）
など聴き所は多いです。
ただ、90年代後半特有の「ゴチャゴチャして上辺だけ掠めるような」音の
プロダクションが災いし、今聴くと首をかしげる曲があるのも事実。
良くも悪くも90年代の空気を封じ込めた作品と言えるでしょう。

U.N.K.L.E.とは、英国のレーベル、Mo'waxの主催者ジェームス・ラヴェルおよびそのプロジェクトを指すのだそうだ。
この作品は、J.ラヴェルその人とDJ SHADOWを中心に、多彩なボーカリストを招き制作された98年作。
１曲ごとボーカルが変わるたび、U.N.K.L.E.というバンド（？）の姿は変容する。
しかし「核」になるダンサブルながらアンビエントな魅力は貫かれている。
まるで、夢の中で昔別れた恋人と二人で踊ってるような浮遊感と哀しさがある。
因みに私は、Rabbit In Your HeadlightsのPVでU.N.K.L.E.を知ったが、最初RADIOHEADの未発表曲かと思った。
それほどThom Yorkeの声は個性的で、いつも通り切なかった。
Thom目当てで入手した本作だが、今では他の曲を聴く機会が多い。
私にとってはこのアルバムが「当たり」だったということだろう。
またRADIOHEADというバンドがOK ComputerからKid Aへと辿る経緯となった作品としても理解できる。

まずUNKLEを知りたいなら、この作品を聞くべきだと思います。とりあえず、聞いてみてください。聞けばUNKLEの凄さがわかる作品になっているとおもいます。
