70年代を代表するバンドとなったKISSも80年代に入り、エアロスミス同様に落ちぶれていった。
そんな状況を打開すべく、彼らの最大のアイデンティティーであるメイクを捨て素顔勝負の第2作目。

1985年、時代はMOTOLEY CLUE、RATTのブレイクでLA-METALブーム勃発。

ハードでありキャッチーでもあるこのアルバムは、そんなご時世にぴたりと当りKISSは再び黄金期を迎える事となる。

また、このアルバムではギタリストに新鋭のマーク・セント・ジョンを迎え、80年代HR/HMには不可欠のテクニカルなギターソロもふんだんにフィーチュアされている。

マーク・セント・ジョンがベースを弾いている曲があるとか、次作で加入するブルース・キューリックが1曲ギターソロを弾いている等の裏話はあるらしいが、ポールスタンレーも好きだと公言するこのアルバム、文句なくカッコいい！

80年代、LAメタル全盛時発表のアルバム。作曲にボンジョヴィ等との仕事で知られる、デスモンドチャイルドを迎え、良質のメロディを有した優れたHM/HRアルバムに仕上がってます。シングルカットされたHEAVEN'S ON FIREなど当時ビデオで何回も見ました。サウンド、メロディに関しても、当時の周りの若手バンドと比較して、お金がかかってるといった感じで、余裕すら感じます。メイクを落としても音楽で勝負できる、まだまだ若いもんには負けんという意気込みを感じます。昔のキッスのイメージからすると、かなりHM寄りと感じますが、時代にマッチした好アルバムで、個人的に気に入ってます。

このアルバムではリードギタリストが、ヴィニーヴィンセントからマークセントジョンに交代しています。サウンド的には前作に引き続きキッス流ヘヴィーメタルなサウンドです。ギターはあくまでも硬質な音で、そこにキャッチーなメロディーとコーラスがのる感じかな。エース時代の音に馴染んでいるファンにとっては、少々取っ付きにくい音かもしれませんが、HR/HMファンであるならば、きっと気に入ると思いますよ。ちなみに私は、ノーメイク時代ではアニマライズが一番好きです。特にお薦めなのは、アイヴハドイナフ、ヘヴンズオンファイアー、ゲットオールユーキャンテイク、スリルズインザナイトの四曲です。もちろん他の曲も駄作はありませんので、ぜひいっぺん聴いてみてください。
