よほどのバルビローリファンか物好きでないかぎり、手を出さないほうが無難。まず異様に遅いテンポに誰しも驚くだろう。いらいらするかも知れない。テンポを遅くすることにメリットがないわけではない。細かいところを丁寧に表現できるし、リラックスした印象を出すこともできる。逆に遅さによって緊張感を高めることもできる。

バルビローリは弦をゆったり歌わせて情感の表出に心を砕く。が、あまりの遅さに緊張はとぎれがち。メリハリをつけようという意識もなさそうだ。曲全体を一色に染め上げようとしてしているのだろうが、引き締まった感じがなくなってしまった。

バレンボイムはそんな指揮者によくつき合っている。協奏曲とはいいながらピアニストが主導権をとりにくい曲なので、協力するしかないのだろう。繊細で美しいピアノがバルビローリの紡ぎ出す大海のようなオケにうまくはまっている。
聴きようによってはユニークで面白いことこの上ない演奏だが、お奨めするのは気がひける。
