　イタリア出身のプログレ･バンドの、’７２年発表の２nd。
　イタリアン･プログレ特有のドロドロした、へヴィでダークなシンフォニック･プログレだ。
　サウンドの軸となっている、あらゆるキーボード類が総動員され、まくし立てるような狂暴さと、繊細を通り越して不気味なまでの静寂さが同居しており、その対比が、この独特な狂気の世界を構築している。
　それを支えるギターとドラムも、煽るように激しく追走しており、ハード･ロック色も極めて強い。
　けれども、楽曲自体はポップで、ヴォーカルもノーマルで歌唱力もしっかりしている。シンフォニックなパートも美しく巧妙に作られていて、そのあたりが、単なるマニア向けで終わっていない、上手さの表れだろう。
　ここまで徹底して無茶してくれると、ダークであれ不気味であれ、愉快にも痛快にも感じてくる。

ムゼオローゼンバッハ「ZARATHUSTRA」などと並ぶイタリアへヴィシンフォの名盤。とにかく壊れてます！ねじれて歪んだ異形の美。エキゾチックで神秘的、不気味でどこかエロティックな、狂気に満ちた世界。ロックの暴力性とクラシックの伝統美が入り乱れつつ、無調音楽など現代音楽の要素を多分に取り入れた実験的・知性的なサウンド。かなりアバンギャルド。立ち込める邪教的な臭気。煙を吹き出し火花を散らして暴走する機関車のような演奏、ピアノ・チェンバロ等の貴族的で耽美的な響き、幽鬼が漂うようなスキャットなどが奇怪に入り乱れる。中心人物ジャンニはナポリ出身、オザンナの前身バンドに参加していたせいもあるのか、オザンナ・チェルヴェッロなどに通じる雰囲気も持っている。
「イントロダクション」は不気味なスキャットから始まり、オルガンや怪しいノイズに彩られて高揚していく。途中、へヴィなギターが美しいピアノと絡み合いながら頂点に達する部分が特にカッコイイ。そこから緩やかな歌を経た後、妖しい美しさのチェンバロが落ち着きのない演奏と絡んで走り回る展開とゆったり歌が入る展開が何度も交互に入れ代わる様には頭がクラクラしてしまう。「第一部」はイントロダクションの後半の音像そのままに激しい熱狂へと到るが、急に気品に満ちたチェンバロが響く…すさまじいコントラスト。「第二部」は力強い歌や儚げに歌が目立つかと思いきや、すぐ混沌に飲まれる。後半はキングクリムゾンの「THE DEVILE’S TRIANGLE」終盤みたいなダークな熱狂。「第三部」はジャジーでありつつインパクトのある展開。突然走り出すピアノが印象的。「エピローグ」はピアノやオルガン響く大げさで壮大な幕開け。中盤、単調に繰り返される不気味なベースの上を暴れ回る即興演奏から音がだんだん減っていく展開が面白い。最後はこの曲の最初の壮大さを取り戻し、更に一曲目のようなスキャットが舞うエンディングへ。

初めて聞いたのは15年ほど前か。初めて買ったイタリア・プログレ。
ジャケットを眺めながら、何となく「まったり系」かの印象を受け、真夜中に寝ながら聞き始めたが、それからがもう大変。
寝れない。全曲通して圧倒的な緊張感。正直、メロディーとかリズムとか、全然分からない。何でこんな演奏してるのか、何でこんなヴォーカルなのか。ただ、有無を言わさぬ緊張感がほとばしり、興奮して眠れなくなってしまった。

「これがイタリアか！」と衝撃を受けたが、その後に他のバンドも聞いてみたが、これほどの衝撃をうけたアルバムには出会わなかった。
