このアルバムは一言で表現しにくい。ノリで勝負しない。清涼感溢れる音は皆無だ。ギターはこれでもかと言うほど歪んでいるし、ボーカルは咽頭を酷使しまくっている。そして、ノイズの渦。暗く、美しい。ヘビー・メタルでもないし、デス・メタルでもない（たぶん）。一部踊れるかな？基本的にはじっとしながら聴くのかな？いずれにしても、早朝のホテルのロビーや、清潔な高級ブティックでは絶対流してはいけない音楽である。

随分前にツタヤで借りてきてＭＤに録音したのだけれど、時折思い出したようにシェルフから取り出してくる。何度も聴くに堪えるロックだと思う。よく聴けば、意外と親しみやすいメロディーを含んでいる。そして、それを分厚く覆い尽くしている陰鬱かつ刺激的なサウンドから深いカタルシスを得ることが出来る。いつまで経っても「得体の知れないサウンド」だからこそ醸し出すことのできる神秘性。深遠かつ隠微で、暗澹たる森を想起させる。

慣れるまでは時間がかかるかも知れない。私は最初に1曲目を聴いた時点で、すでにたっぷりと疲れてしまった。柄にもなく内省的になりたい時、人の死や嫉妬や裏切りについてじっくりと考えてみたい時、水虫の痒さを忘れたい時などに聴いてみたい作品だ。

ちなみに、本作をレコーディングする時、リーダーのトレント・レズナーは家を借りたのだが、その家とは女優のシャロン・テートが殺された現場となった家であった。彼は知らずに借りたらしいが、のちに手放している。もしかしたらこのアルバムに何かが憑いているかも、と勘ぐってみたくなる。

前作『Broken』で世に知れわたり、ロックの頂点を確かなものにした、
『Nine Inch Nails』（≒Trent Leznor）の期待のフルアルバム。
今回は前作とうって変わった作風。
前作ほどの激しさは無いにしても、どこを聴いても機械音、ノイズ音、…まさしく前作以上の音の嵐。
このバンドの曲を手がけるTrentの憎悪、悲壮感、といったものが、そのまま曲になったともいえる作風。
Trent自身のことを歌ったともいえる、聴き手を撲殺するようなMr,Self Destruct(1)、ライブ定番の曲Piggy(2)、
ハイテンポ＆変則リズムが売りのMarch Of The Pigs(4)、彼らのテクノサイド傑作曲とも言えるシングル曲Closer(5)、
聴き手を圧倒するノイズの嵐のごときRuiner（6）、美しいインスト曲A Warm Place(11)、機械音が鳴り響くReptile(13)、
暗くてもの悲しいバラードHurt(15)など。
このアルバムはかなり聴き手を選ぶ、聴きにくい部類だと思うが、前作同様90年代ロックの名盤の一枚であるに違いない。
また、日本盤だけにボーナストラックが追加されている。

嫌いな人はとことん嫌いだろう。
だけど、これ一度はまるとクセになるのです。
最初はまったくピンと来ない。
だけど、ノイズの中に埋もれたキャッチーなメロディーに気づく頃には既に虜。
天才の作品は、常にどこかでポップなもの。
NINには他のインダストリアルバンドにはない、どこか引きつけられる不思議なポップさがある。

自己満足で終らない音を作るあたりトレント・レズナーはやはり天才と呼ぶにふさわしい。
