ロック芸能界での生活をテーマにした「スタジオ録音」と、
そのロック芸能界での彼らの生き様である「ライブ録音」。
当時この２枚組アルバム・テーマの発想からして、
レイしか考えないような内容の作品です。
スタジオものは前作に比べて、すんなりと聴き入り易くなっています。
個人的には５の「ホテルに座って」、
デイヴの「ユー・ドント・ノウ・マイ・ネーム」なんかが好きですが、
小ヒットした８の「スーパーソニック・ロケット・シップ」、
ＲＣＡ時代・代表曲のひとつでもある１０の「セルロイドの英雄」のような
重要な曲も収録されています。
ライブは、やはりこの時期のキンクスならではのもので
当時の時代に逆らうかのような、キャバレーチック・ラッパパラパラの
サウンドになっています。でも、これが素晴らしい。
日曜の午後に酒でも飲みながら、だらだら聴いていたい気分になります。
この頃のライブをこの目で見てみたかったな…。

リリース当時（72年）はKinks初のダブルアルバム（スタジオ１枚、ライブ１枚）として登場していました。
まずはスタジオ録音の１０曲。ツアーするロックバンド（もちろんKinksご自身）メンバーの気分をKinksらしく、時にシニカルに、時にせつなく歌い綴ってくれています。どの曲もさすがに稀代のメロディーメイカーR. Davis、佳曲揃いです。なかでもラストを飾る"Celluloid Hero"はKinksには珍しい６分半に及ぶ大作、かつ、美しい名曲です。個人的には"Hot potatoes"、"Sitting in a hotel rooｍ"、"Supersonis rocketship"なども大好きです。この１０曲をできれば続けてお聴き頂くことをお薦めします、流れよく出来てますから。

ライブ１１曲（サビだけとかイントロだけってのもありますから実際何曲でしょう？）、これは楽しめます。名作Muswell Hillbilliesからの曲が多いですから、これも価値ありますね。当時、こんな風にライブやってたんですね、笑いながら納得できます。

Kinks作品中では案外知られてないのが不思議になっちゃう好盤です。おまけにKinks初期の２曲と対訳つきってのも嬉しい限りですね。

アルバム「マスウェル・ヒルビリーズ」がお好きな人には、ぜひ、聴いていただきたいアルバムです。11~23は72年カーネギーホールにおけるライブ録音で、選曲はリリースしたばかりの「マスウェル・・・」が中心になっています。「アルコール」が必聴です。さながら、ドストエフスキーの「罪と罰」に登場する酔いどれオヤジの悔恨といった調子で、名門カーネギーホールを場末の酒場に一変させるレイの役者ぶりがスゴイです。なにやら、この当時のツアーの様子をおさめた６時間あまりのフィルムがあるとのこと。ぜひ、観てみたいものです。
